Have sequoia wood and need suggestios of what kind of surfboard should I build...

Hi, I`m a chilean surfer who has made some normal foam surfboards, and now I have access to some sequoia wood, length about 7ft.

I tought of a minilongboard about 22" wide, with more tail rocker (3.5") and a rounded pin tail.

I`ll read a lot of the chambering process too.

or should I go for a fish?

thanks already

kike

You definitely have some chambering ahead of you, but a great project.

We built a midlength (7-2) egg out of maritime pine several years ago. Chambered the heck out of it, and while it was a tad heavy (okay, it was pretty darn heavy) it was fun to build and taught me a lot in my woodworking that came in handy later once I started building balsas. When building wooden boards on the heavy side, I tend to stay with shapes that forgive a bit and where drawing longer lines is inherent to the shape, hence my vote for the egg.

Keep us posted and enjoy.

thanks for the suggestion, I personally like the egg shape, shoud I go single fin or 2+1?

My first idea is a single fin with sharp rails on the tail.

Any suggestions on the thickness? maybe 3"?

thanks again

kike

…single with egg rails

2+1 with hard rails on tail

changing news, have wood in this dimensions:

10 ft x 6 inches x 2 inches

maybe I should go bigger and make a 84" or a 9 longboard???

how heavy would a board like that be?

thanks again

kike

Longboard would be sweet.

Weight wise, when I use denser balsa, I come into the 14 to 15 kilos (30-33lbs roughly) for a 9’6". A reasonably chambered balsa with higher quality wood usually comes in between 18 and 25 pounds, for a comparison (there are lots of variables here).

If you go for a heavier wood longboard, I suggest that you increase the vee and going forward that you keep a little bit of a belly. I’ll really help with the rail to rail transitions and make the board more functional.

Enjoy.

Good luck to ya Kike-

Check this out if your goin carbon/kevlar on the rails,

If I were you I wouldn’t waste the wood chambering and would try a blank like this first,
