Hawaii?.............nope, texas

http://www.spadre.com/images/katrinabruce.jpg

maybe someone can post that here for me…but i am technologically illiterate

thanks for doing that for me

wow…

such an epic swell

Ditto.

It looks tilted -like that 1950’s Makaha shot.

it looks big …like that 1950s makaha shot.

“bigger in texas” , eh ?!

hehe

chip

A once in a few decade swell for that part of the USA. Usually it’s just the tanker ripples that break!!!

I always wonder what would happen to the Texas coast if Florida was not there. Prolly be damn good.

Drew

It’d be better without FL there, for sure. But coastline faces southeast - think most the Atlantic swells are N/Eastly direction right.

But that is one heck of a good picha of TX, regardless.

Here is one of my local tanker ripples 4 miles from my house.

Not a hurricane. Just a winter swell.

Dr._StrangeLove, hurricane Dennis was even better than Katrina.

That’s not true at all. Every hurricane season, every year, brings big surf. Depending on your spot on the Texas coast is the difference between blown out and epic. Big surf is nothing new to us Lone Star surfers. Only nowadays we have more people in the water; hence more pictures being taken. Cameras are cheap and easy to use and again cheap to develop film these days. Without the internet, that shot posted would probably never have been seen anywhere - wherein lies the saying There Aint No Surf in Texas. Please, no more tanker ripple jabs. Cheers.

You shouldn’t talk about what you don’t know.

Before anybody gets upset or thinks I think Texas can’t produce big waves I just want to say this is ONLY MY OPINION (Which doesn’t mean much in an internet forum…hehe!) about this ONE PHOTO… It seems its tilted in the original but how much is the question. Just judging by the water line, the guys angle, the way the wave is breaking and the whitewater in the background…I feel this is the reality of this picture.

Still a very fun looking clean wave…

ya dread, an there’s no surf in the bahamas either…

and just for further referance the board in the pic is a 9’gun.

the rider said “I can’t belive I felt under gunned in texas!”

so yeah, you might want to think before you make conclusions again.

I thought the only place to surf in the US was in California and Hawaii??? Just imagine what Washington State (couple 100 miles of coast line and some of the most consistent swell patterns in the Northern Hemisphere) would be like if you could surf there.

I thought the same thing too the first time I saw it. But if you look in the bottom and right hand corner area of the picture, now the water is going downhill right to left, like when the water drains off of a heavy reef break in front of the wave like at Teahupoo. – Texas sandbars don’t do dat.

oh washington and oregon are just awesome. Cold, but consistant .

The original pic could possibly be tilted a tiny bit, but overall, that is a true representation.

There were several much better pics of bigger and heavier waves from hurricane Dennis which the photog pulled almost immediately after posting to sell to Surfer Mag (I believe) for peanuts, who only printed a couple of them, and the rest got trashed I guess, and with the exclusive agreement or whatever was going on, the rest of the pics will never be seen. I could be wrong, but I think this is the case. I’m not trying to talk bad about anyone, just the circumstances happened a certain way and deprived us of more and better pics. Oh well. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

Joel or DeathFrog might have better info on this.

OK, I thought about and re-did my picture… Here’s what I think is the truth to the matter…
