although the Alaia is getting the most attention ,and also the Olo,looking in the dictionary reveals a bunch of names recorded, the most common being:kiko’o,kioe,'onini, paha,pu’ua,'owili, omo, not counting belly board, paipo(originally paepo’o).So arguably, already debate as to which was better?(olo being off limits to the non chiefly class).Anuone on O’ahu see any of these in the Bishop Museum? Interestingly, the Tahitian word for surfing , Horue, is very close to the Hawaiian word Horua or Holua, the sleds that were used on very long courses, built up from earth and rocks.
A lot of the young Hawaiian wooden board builders are visiting the Bishop Museum to learn about the ancient Hawaiian boards. My friend Tom Pohaku Stone revised the intrest in the boards. Check out http://www.hawaiibc.com/home.htm.
