Montgomery “Buttons” Kaluhiokalani…
imagine having THIS said by a six times world champ about your surfing ?!! : -
[ the caption reads :- “Buttons Kaluhiokalani was my inspiration for these type of moves” … ]
backhand , also…
these two’s ability to switchfoot blew me away. [They would do it halfway through a manouevre, sometimes !!]
I wish I had sequence photos of that…
There’s some good footage of them in ‘many classic moments’, and ‘going surfing’ [a YOUNG ‘Bert’, and Michael Ho , in that, as well as Ben Aipa]…as well as, I believe, ‘a matter of style’ [haven’t watched that / seen that here yet…]
Chipfish does it again, bringing to younger surfers attention the influences that make todays surfing what it is.
Take the time and make some effort to see these films and, although nearly 25 years old now, it will still blow you away.

Lopez and Hackman - Check out the old school Quik baggies, er ah, short shorts, LOL. Sorry about the size
Rory is the man!

Still see some of those guys around. Buttons is now a few cards short of a full deck. Last I saw Larry was on the news going to jail and i heard Rory was working on a boat and is now into chicken fighting.
Sam Hawk was hanging with Rory and Gerry back then. I spent lots of time in the water just watching them in awe.
And, Shaun Thompson was our next door neighbor.
