In the latest issue of Surfer Mag, I saw an add for a waterproof, digital, surfbord-mounted digital video camera. It had extra wide angle so you can get your entire body in the shot, even on a shortboard. Don’t remeber the brand of the camera. Just have to check out the mag I guess.
What model is that Canon camera? I haven’t seen anything from them like that for less than a couple thousand. Good waterhousings run about $700 up to several thousand.
There is a panasonic consumer 3ccd HD camera that shoots to SD flash cards that is about $700.00 USD. A decent waterhousing for that would be about $700.
I just read that Nikon will soon be selling the D90, a new 12 megapixel D-SLR with 720P/24 video capability. The specs on that camera are really good. I’m thinking about getting that camera myself.

Your right on the housing. I have seen them go for that used…which is the way I prefer to buy them.
I can’t wait for the D90. May make a few of the handi cams go by by. Not sure of the model Canon, but I saw it at best by and a friend of mine owns one. Of course he also owns a high end Canon.
Cannon GL 2 is a really nice semi pro 3 ccd camera, probably better than what you need for web work. retails here for around 1G.
JVC also has a good 3 ccd camera for around 1 G. The newer cameras with the built in hard drives are way better than using tapes also.
I have an old sony drv 525 (I think) that is good as long as light conditions are good and probably retails for about 300 now. (much more when I bought it). search you tube for “hurricane helene, surfing canada, nova scotia” for the quality of the sony camera. a 3ccd would give you a much sharper image.
sorry to disappoint you mate but i’m not sure if you’ll get a new setup for under two grand. there are hd ‘prosumer’ cameras around that price, but their zooms aren’t adequate. for surfing, you really need to get a 20x optical zoom.
i used to shoot with a canon xm2 (called the gl2 in the states). it was a great camera, great lens, but it’s sd not hd. now i shoot with a canon xha1, & i love it.
If you can wait until the Nikon D90 hits the market, you may be able to get a great camera and a long lens for about $2000 USD. It will be a much better camera than any current video camera under 10K. You could use a wide angle lens for water shots and a long lens for beach shots, and shoot great stills or 720P HD video.
Otherwise, the canon 3ccd HD cameras are all pretty good and have a 20x lens. The cheapest one is about $3000 USD.
One thing you may want to think about is shutter speed and frame rates. For really good surf videos most film cameras are shooting about 1 1/2 to 2 times normal speed to get clean slow mo. The newer pro Cameras from Panasonic and Sony have variable shutter and frame rates. You’ll be able to get film camera results with video. I think the Sony has a 20x lens, but these cameras run about $6000+ USD.
