Health Concerns?

I recently moved my office into a large shed that was previously a board shaping room.  The owner cleaned it out really well but there is definitely still some dust around from the foam.  I lived with it for a bit and then tried wiping some of it up with a wet paper towel but then I noticed a lot more of the dust settling on things so I think my wiping made it more airborne for a day or so.

How big of a health concern is this stuff?

No worse than wood dust.

Cover your mouth and use an airhose or leaf blower.

Bye bye dust.

I don’t have any idea because I am not a lawyer.

Try spraying it down with a hose and water to do a more thorough cleaning.

I thought Clark Foam had to shut down because they discovered something in the foam could cause cancer?

Uh huh - along with coffee, anti-persperant, bubble bath, talcum powder, processed meat, cell phones, and alcohol

A good trick against dust is making the floor wet and then wipe everything so that the dust becomes airborne.

A large percentage of the dust will be caught by the water on the floor so you can wash it away.

I shape and glass in the same room and use this trick against dust in the lam, not perfect but it helps.

Edit: I now realize that putting a ventilator in the room while the floor is wet would increase the effectiveness of this method.

And alcohol…

Huck, say it aint so !

Clark foam closed due to Grubbys’ hard headedness and unwillingness to comply.

You’re gonna die!!!

Alcohol is associated with an increased risk of many types of cancers. In fact, 3.5% of cancer deaths worldwide are attributable to the consumption of alcohol. These include breast and ovarian cancer for women, colon cancer in men, as well as cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx and larynx, liver and stomach. To be safe, women should limit themselves to no more than one alcoholic drink a day, and men to two drinks. http://pdf.nuehealth.com/environmental-hazards/

Eat healthy, exercise regularly, don’t smoke or drink, and die anyway!

Barry Bennett is in his 80’s, he’s still pouring all the Bennett/Dion long board blanks in brookvale, been playing with those chemicals and dust for 50+ years and he’s still going like a machine.

You’ll be fine…

I asked his son why he’s still going, said his mates who retired to the couch deteriorated quickly so by continuing to work it will actually prolong his health. Seems to be working…

Do you guys spend time around that dust without breathing protection?

If you’re that concerned then nothing that anyone here tells you is going to make you feel any safer.

I’m trying to figure out if foam dust is something people with knowledge of it avoid exposure to without breathing protection.

It cannot be good for you. You should find a way to clean out the room or move to a different place. If not get a respirator.

30 years from now you’ll see if it was bad for you. If it was, you’ll be very sorry.

A little exposure is no big deal, but prolonged exposure to any dust  is best kept to a minimum.

just curious - why set up office in a shed if you’re worried about dust?

I am amazed that some of the Very longtime backyard glassers here are ok . 0 saftey measures , maximum fumes with no ventilation so they don’t get busted .  Chemicals all over your skin from just the fumes .

There will be dust forever in a long used shaping room .

if truly concerned, why not just staple clear plastic on the walls and ceiling, cut out and tape around any neccessary opening for windows, lights, swtiches, etc, and hose the floor down a few times.  Do it in an afternoon, an inexpensive fix that should put your worries to rest.

Inhaling any kind of dust is bad for you. Some kinds are worse than others.

I have to wonder why you ask about this when it seems you’ve already set up that space as your office. I would have taken measures before moving in. I guess you could take all your stuff out and give it a good cleaning? Why not?
