Heavy duty board racks attached to plaster walls....?

We just bought a house, and the inside of the TINY little “garage” has plaster walls…I need to make some racks to hold about 3 longboards (horizontal) and then another little rack that will hold about 5 shortboards (vertically). I have no idea how I will attach the wood to the plaster walls…help?

Most wall studs are at 450mm centers. they are the timbers in the wall that run vetical. Beg,borrow , buy or steel a studfinder, most hardware shops will have them . Screw into studs if not get plenty off qcell and resin because they will pull out of the wall.

You can locate studs by tapping along the wall. They are installed in fractions of a plywood panel span - usually 16" or 24" apart, vertical.

If you can’t reliably tap-tap-tap and find the studs, buy a cheap studfinder at the hardware store or HD. Under $10, I think.

Assume the gypboard is about 5/8" thick, so you’ll need screws to penetrate the gyp plus 3/4 into the stud, plus the thickness of whatever you are fastening, to get a secure longboard rack. You can use toggle bolts if studs can’t be found.

I would be very careful with anything on a gypboard wall, that I didn’t know was anchored into the 2x4 studs behind it.

tenover, if the ceiling is unfinished (exposed rafters) get a couple of sticks of 3/4 emt pipe and pipe insul for padding. bend to a squared U shape and screw to beams. much safer than walls but if you must use walls and its block or brick behind the plaster, Tap cons hold anything if installed correctly.

hey I saw this might be just the thing, heavy duty & on sale $59

Congratulations on buying your new house, Tenover. Mike

450MM Wow! that sounds far between studs…Does that come out to 16 inches or so?

Use your cordless drill with 1/8 bit to find middle of stud…predrill stud with bit smaller than a 1/4 lag bolt that will pentrate wood stud by an inch or more

Maybe figure one lag on for each end of each board at a minumum

Yep 450 centers is about normal in australia anyway

oh man, please tell me you made a killing buying a house right now…

It was just the right time…We got a smokin’ deal on a 3Br/3bth ona great lot, in a good neighborhood, West of the 5. 5 minute drive to the Cliffs. We’re very happy…Scared to death about making those payments, but happy!
