Help a Newb Save a Board

The mostly masked board.

The fully masked board.

Cold weather and a pinlining problem put me off trak. I completed pinlining and I’ve put the top and bottom gloss coats on. I didn’t filter epoxy that I put on the bottom. There are quite a few zits on the bottom. I filtered the top gloss coat and it came out much cleaner.

is she done ???

give us a ride report

please

I made a similar mistake before and was able to cover it up with a fat pinline, using a sharpie water based paint pen.I have also found that 3M tape works better than the blue painters tape.

I need to sand/polish out some zits. It will be April before I hit the local lakes and rivers in my dry suit. I’ll post a final polished board picture and probably a ride post. Here a picture form the Nationals Wakeboard League, Nationals Wakesurf Championship Long board competition. That where this board is headed for 2008.

In all a great experience and a learning experience. I have a lot more respect for what the pros turn out.

Big,

Your stoke is infectious…

My next board will be an enlightening one - no wait a lighting one.

I’m planning a night surf event in Indiana. I want a board that will literally light up the water.

The design for my #2. The blue line will be a pair of cold cathode lamps.

The blank and the lamps

The lamps again. The lamps can be turned on steady of flashing.

I have to finish up polishing the long board before working on the night rider.

start a new thread for the night rider.

Ken,

I was planning on a new thread. I’m probably a two weeks away from getting started on the new board. A few of my landlocked freinds are interested in seeing ot helping on the next board. I’ll post up when I the the ball rolling.

I rode the longboard last wekend. I really don’t have nose riding experience. I was able to stall the board and get up to the nose but I lost ballance. I’ll give a few more rides. All in all a good time.

I don’t have an ocean near by but I did buy a new wave machine this year.

Here’s my crew from the first ride of the season.

I can only hold eight boards on my surf vehicle

Wow, you hand sanded that sucker? I think you owe it to yourself to buy a new tool. 2 routers - check, sweet ski boat - check, orbital sander _______.

My arms are tired just looking at the pictures. And I thought it takes forever with a small 5 inch orbital. I can’t even imagine by hand. Big props, your guns must be impressively large.

Bigshow,

Congrats on a great recovery and a fantastic board. Ive been looking around at the local marinas for wake surf boards and im not really impressed by by what they are selling. Your board blows theirs away… Here is a wake surfer im working on at the moment. A 4’ 8" mini wake fish

Mudybech, Thanks for the complement. I’d say that I think the bottom of my long board is too dark. I love the deck of your board, the bright orange/red/yellow resin swirl looks very nice. I read something that Austin posted. He said to keep the colors light. I think he’s right. I used brighter colors on my second traditional wakesurfer. I like the appearance on my second board much more than my first board. See this link for my second board: http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87668/541186.html

I don’t think I’ll ever buy a factory built wakesurfer again. I have ridden over 30 different wakesurf boards. Boards from the big three are pop outs. They are ok, they serve a purpose. For example my first wakesurfer was a Hyper Light Broadcast 5.6. I find that the Broadcast is a good beginners board, it’s stable, and big. However it’s not as fast as some of the better middle ground boards.

I really like the Inland surfer boards. The Yellow is my favorite IS board. If I could have only one board, one board for everyone, It would probably be an IS Blue.

Jerry Price at Shred Stixx makes some amazing boards. I’m on the big side, about 220 pounds. The Shred Stixx Ja Mako is an amazing board for me.

I’ve ridden some of the skim style boards. For the most part they have been too small for me. I met Mike Armstrong, owner of Calibrated Wakesurfing, at the NWL Nationals last year. He let me ride his Piscus. That was probably my best ride last year.

If you want a top notch wakesurf board with the option of custom graphics you should check out the Walker Project. I rode an F18. That’s an amazing wakesurf board.

One question: I see you posed with your board in front of an I/O boat. As a member of the American Wakesurf Association, an organizer of wakesurf events, and an author of wakesurfing rules, and training text, I must take a moment to point out that wake surfing behind outboard boats and I/O boats is strongly discouraged. There are some new models of I/Os that offer a protective cage around the propeller. That would be the only acceptable I/O wakesurf boat configuration that I can think of.

So please be careful and only wakesurf behind inboard boats.

Regards,

Ed

Point, I started with a 3M hand sanding block. I was afraid that with a power tools I would sand through the glass. Eventually I broke down and used an orbital sander. I just spent a lot on the boat. I think I’ll put off buying more new tools for a bit.

I did find a local EPS vendor. For $45 I bought enough foam to build four EPS boards. I’m going to make two of them for two separate events supporting the American Cancer Society.

Bigshow

how come you didnt post your Liteboard here?

I looked at your link and it came out great

I have a pinline tip for you

after you apply the paint drag a platic atm card on top of the tape down the line and it will even up the paint and level it out.

Ken, I posted it here but forgot where it was at or what I called it. I have some nagging problems getting the power supply to fit in the box I made. I need to find a way to finish it off.

Here it is Ken. http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=360742;search_string=Night%20Rider;#360742

Not as up to date as Wake World

Ed,

Thats great advice that is recieved with alot of respect. The boat you see in the picture is my fishing boat that I use to hammer striper in the winter on the chesapeake bay. My girlfriend lives on a lake up in Maryland and is looking to buy a malibu 23 lSV as we speak. Im new to the skiing/wakeboat board world and look forward to getting on some of my surfboards i’ve built as well as a wake board. Thanks for the safety advice. Heres a look at the boat she looking to buy. Your thoughts on it?
