help a newbie shaper with a retro single fin template and suggestions?

hi everyone my name is mark and i am plannig to shape my 3rd board and I was hoping to shape a board that is very similar to the green board in “thicker than water” or the White one is “single fin yellow”. I understand i sounded like a noob right now but that is the only way I can describe the board. Can anyone give me any advise on the board from how I should shape the board?

  1. rails? tucked under?

  2. flat bottom or slight vee? or double vee?

  3. where should i place the fin ?

  4. how wide and how long ( i weigh 145 and use a 5’10 shortboard)

I really appreciate it thank you so much for helping me with my steep learning curve

\1st board – 5’9" quad but too little rocker and too much kant on the fins (wont hold the rail on drop ins) might add a single fin in the back to make it into a bonzer.

2nd board — 5’9" shortboard with lost speed demond template but too much hard rail , wayyyyyyyy to much concave on the bottom the board hardly turns -straight arrow down the line (Slight improvement on glassing though)

up comming retro single fin – hopefully with some success

I know I keep saying this, but I can’t help it…

If you want a retro single fin that actually works, you gotta check out the MSF series Al Merrick is doing… Both the first version and the second are excellent boards for what they are. Developed with/for Rob Machado as an alternative to the mainstream. A buddy of mine built a knock-off and it’s a lot of fun. Experiemnt with different fins for kicks…

or check out surf prescriptions…docs boards for donny are pretty sick looking

If this helps, the dimensions on mine are 5’8" x 14/19.25/15.25 x 2.25. Like you I normally ride a 5’10" shortboard. My board is the “Rex” model from UM Surfboards in Oceanside.

Best of luck with your new shape.

now i just need to go see if a nice surfshop will allow me to copy some template hahha Let me update

I have 6’9’’ CI singlefin and i think that this photo will give an idea of the rocker, foil and template. I wish i had the 6’1’’ version now but when i purchased this one i was longboarding 90% of the time.

On this board bottom contours and rails are really nothing compared to any other singlefin i tried before. The bottom: deep single concave at the center and close to the nose, and DEEP double concaves at the tail, a la Bonzer, with vee.

Hope this helps you.

I’d take the CI singlefin as inspiration but would develope my own ideas.

Good luck!

Coque.

Take a good pic of the outline of the board you want to copy, and I’ll will Autocad it for you.
