One more thing, if you are using Pre-mixed sanding resin, I always shake the resin well before pouring it out into my bucket. I have heard that wax can rise to the top of the resin while it is in the can. If this happens and yu dont mix it, when you pour out the resin to use it, you might be pouring all of the wax out of your can on your first hotcoat, leaving the rest of the resin without wax. Therefore it will essentially be Lam resin. This might be a cause of the tackiness. That is why it is better to mix your sanding resin using Lam resin and Surfacing Agent in your bucket right before you hotcoat. This ensures correct proprtions and a good mix. I have used Pre-mixed Sanding resin in the past with much success but lightly shook the can right before I poured out desired amount. Fully catalysing hotcoats is another great idea. Good luck.
Since my name popped up here (really, 11 years ago?) I’ll just say I do my hotcoats the way mcding described when I use polyester and have never had the problem again. I still put a bit of catalyst in the hot coat even though it’s UV. I think that was kokua’s recommendation. I mix my own sanding resin. I mostly use epoxy resin now unless I want a nice resin tint or it’s too cold and wet to risk an epoxy disaster. UV stuff is great for amateurs like me and pro’s like mcding. No second hot coat. A glosscoat even if I’m not going to take it to a polish finish. Mostly to cover up my shitty sanding skills and weave hits. Good luck in your board building. Mike
Absolutely! ALSO; if it makes you netvous using straight UV; use a little MEK. Lowel
Right. So much more the reason to stir before you poor. This isn’t Epoxy. It doesn’ froth. Also; If you are using UV powder stir it into the resin the night before. Let it set overnight. The granules will dissolve more throughly. This method was referred to me by PeteC. I was getting brown sugar in my lam and Hotcoats which made me nervous but at sanding it went away. Lowel
I may be a little guilty here of mis-information…
Epoxy resin uses the same mix for lam / hot coat / gloss… no wax or stirene or other stuff…no extra MEKP or sunlight.
The EPOXY gloss coat step is often refered to as 2nd hot coat. Because it’s the same resin mix and it’s a bitch to buff to gloss so …we use other tricks… I talk about 2nd hot coat often…not a poly or UV thing…
Do what McDing says

mmmm
what tricks to buff epoxy?
never had a need to, but would love to have a need to… just don’t know how to ha
… i’ve only every gone through the grades of paper to get down, or buff some clear auto paint.
