Been cruising around these forums soaking up as much knowledge as I can for a while now. I sucessfully made my first board a month ago( a 7’10" mini longboard for my girlfriend) and I have caught the shaping bug really bad. I want to make myself a mini glider nex and was hoping for some input on the template that I drew up. Thank you in advance for all your advice!!
I have a full-size glider style board and it is amazing - but I’m a little skeptical about how much glide you’ll get on one that is 2.5 feet shorter…
I guess a glider minus 2.5 feet is pretty much like a Christenson “C-bucket” that people rave about, but not sure whether folks love the updated single fin performance of those boards, or how much glide they get out of them, etc.
Yeah, a c-bucket style board is what I’m after. I do want to make a full size glider eventually but I don’t really have room for a big board at my current place. So, you think the dimensions look good?

I’m no expert, but looks like the wide point should be a bit forward?
Some (really experienced) guys probably have success dreaming up an outline via software and then converting that directly into a surfboard, but if I were you, I might try to ride a few boards similar to what it is you think you want, and then borrow some lines / dimensions / elements from whichever board you liked the most, while layering in your own ideas.
I have no delusions that i am any where near good enough to translate the digital drawing directly to the foam. I am using the cad program only as a tool to help visualize how the outline will look. I have ridden a few boards similar to this which is why I want to persue making my own. I have traced one of them and I plan on making a masonite template from it to draw the outline on to the blank. Thanks for all your input, without the knoweledgable folks here at swaylocks I would have never had the courage to start shaping!!
It's all in the rocker....get rid of the pointed nose and tail.....just smooth it out...rounded pin...egg nose....download and study the Clark catalog. Read the shapers comments.
I love surfing eggs ,I love small waves.....some boards turn out to be Magic...some don't.....check out the photo archives in the resources section.
I’m not really looking for an egg, I have plenty of smal wave boards, I’m looking for something that can handle a little more size, power and can draw nice long lines. Thanks for all the advice, I will post build and finished pics as soon as I have them!!
but will be too hard to turn and can pearl (dig) in late take off and when the lip smash the inside rail (due to the rocker at 2´ and wider area + rails) trying to pass a heavy section
Thanks so much for the input. Did a little revising, rounded out the nose a tad and added a little more rocker. I do want to keep it fairly flat for trim speed. Let me know what you think.
so if you have plenty of small wave board, then this one must be for bigger stuff...personally I would add more nose rocker, even just a little in the last foot or foot and a half....doesnt mean the board wont glide but will prevent it getting caught when the waves are a bit hollower....I'd be thinking 4 3/4" minimum and 2 1/2" tail but hey thats just me...but bottom contours and fins come into the tail rocker thing too.....like the planshape, looks missile-like to me.......bottom shape ??? fins ??? foam used, glassing ???
I am definitely digging the planshape too. I’ve been drawn to boards like this for some time now so it will be great to shape one! Still thinking about what to do with the bottom, it’s going to be a single fin so I was thinking single to double concave with some v in the tail. any suggestions? I’m going to use the us blanks 7-9h and haven’t even begun to think about glassing schedule yet.
I just found this, looked interesting, hunted and found this old thread that it seemed to fit into…
larry mabile honey badger 7’ 0" from mollusk website: “Larry Mabile’s version of a shorter Skip Frye glider! Single fin that works well in the steep stuff and trims with the best of them. ”
Bit of a hijack, but if you kept the narrower outline ( your last one ), you could probably get away with a bit less rocker, couldn’t you?. The nose and wide point width are not that wide for that long. I would have thought wide and flat would glide better than narrower and flat?. I guess for bigger, or more steep waves then the narrow version would work well. Keep us posted mate, love midlength boards, so versatile for me.
