Help on fins cant

Hello guys,

I’m new at the forum, and before creating a new topic, I tried to look for older ones, but I didn’t find the information regarding to the tipe of board I’m planning to make…

I started shaping recently, and I’m working on my 15th design right now. But before that, I just wanna call for some help regarding to the fins angulation (cant). I’m 5’5 tall, and weight 55kg… I’m making a 5’5 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/16 with 1/8 concave at the center, running down to 1/8 double concave at the fins area…

So my big concern is about the angulation that the glasser should put. In my last boards I choose to put 4º only, and I think the boards ended up a litlle stuck… So I’m tring to raise that to 6.5º,  (that appears to be the commun/avarage fins cant for modern surf, right? )

Can any one help me out with this? The board is for small and week waves.

I apreciatte any help…

Cheers,

Yago

Hi,

The 2 “common” cant are 6° and 9° depending on the concave or Vee deepness you have on tail.

The more angle your bottom contour has,the more cant you’ll put on side fins.

I’m new to this world too so w8 a confirmation or correction from more experienced people in case I said smtg wrong.

The toe angle may be another thing to check if you feel stuck. You may have put too much toe so the drag slow you down.

Hi Yago

Concaves will generally lessen the cant of the fin box when installed. Using a 9* FCS fusion plug for instance on a concave edge will pull the cant towards the stringer a bit and make the cant more like 7*-8*…

Vee in the tail will do the opposite and kick the toe angle out a bit…

You might also want to check out ProBox Fin Sytems. They have removable cant inserts so you can change the cant anytime to make your board perform better.
