Help on ID for G&S 70's Twin Fin

I’m going to restore the board I learned how to surf on during the late 70’s.  It’s my brother’s, so it’s for him, but I just wondered if anyone had any background on it.

Okay, got pics to attach, couldn’t modify the first post.  p.s.  How do I get the fins out?  There are holes in them that caused stress points that later caused them both to break.  The holes were for securing the bungee cord that was tied around your foot.  Yeah, great hydrodynamics back then.

I'd suggest dynamite, and lots of it.

Tap the fins forward in the box, they will come out.

Woohoo!  Thank you very much.

Hey Bill, hope you're kickin' ass on your recovery. Please refresh my memory on the name of that box system. Usually those arcane details don't escape me, but I'm not pullin' that one up.

pompano, excuse me for suggesting that you blow your board up. I shaped myself one just like it in '71 (or as close as I could get at age 15 - LOL). Still have nightmares about that thing...

Those look like Guidance Systems fins. If so, the board is no newer than 1972. If they aren’t glued in, force is the way to go. Either tap forward with a rubber mallet, or place a block of wood against them and hit the block with a hammer. Whichever method you use, hit near the base.

I’m amazed the fins are still in. Especially if they aren’t glued. That fin system was notorious for fins falling out while in use.

Thanks, Sammy. Lexan fins and no leashes and groovy mag ads that were actually about surfboards. It was fun to be there for all that.

Bingo.  On Bill’s advice, I took a small 1 x 2 and placed it at the base, tapped with a rubber mallet and they slid forward and came loose very easily.

Yeah, making replacements for these fins will take some work.  Lots of little features on the base.

In an odd way, they remind me of the O’fish’ls that Greg likes to use.
