Next up on my quiver building excercise is a 7’0" bigger wave board. Looking around the CI black beauty seems to fit the build - a fuller / floater bigger wave board to rail to rail carving rather than tricks.
so i was wondering ive got length 7’0 and wide point 20 1/2" in mind can anyone help with some more numbers to make the outline look along the lines of a CI BB.
Im not aiming to replicate it, its just its the outline that looks most like what i want, so nose / tail width and any others would be a great help.
I’ve shaped/built two BBs this year, one is a 6’11 x 19.1 and the other is a 7’6 x 20.4 fungun…see pics attached. My logo is the 7’6.
The CI BB is very wide…I saw a 7’0 recently and it was 21.25 and 3.2 thick! Mine are much lower volume and width.
If you have some eye/hand skill you can create your desired BB outline with only the length and width and a print of the BB off the website. I make paper templates using blue mask tape…I tape the paper to a wall and tweak the outline/tape for a couple of hours until just right, comparing with the print. You need some distance to see it right…about 10-20 ft. This approach also helps you develop curve evaluation skill…after a couple you’ll see things you never saw b4. You can also use pencil instead of tape. When youre done, sleep overnight and then look again…make adjustments if necessary.
The tail/nose dims on my two boards are very similar…about 13.4 tail and 10.8 nose…the 7’6 has a curvier outline on purpose. I’ll recheck those dims and get back to u later.
Update: here are the actuals…
6’11 x 19.1 x 13.4 x 10.6 x 2.6
7’6 x 20.4 x 13.3 x 10.9 x 2.5
I also added a rocker pic of the 7’6…the nose is flipped but the tail rocker is spot on.
PS - “magic” comes from proper inter-relationship of your design variables…IMO, rocker and fin config are the two biggies…the others are almost as important…but thats debatable. Never lose sight of your rocker
Beautiful job! I just love those full figured girls…I mean boards. I rode a very similar shape for twelve years. Recently had to retire my “Magic” board due to overuse however, my wife just surfed with the guy that bought it and he loves it. Yada yada…la la…anyway, thanks for the advice on taping the outline up and viewing it from a distance. Really helps your eye catch the flat spots in an outline.
