So I have these two gorgeous swirl/cutlap/swirl boards that I was just wrapping up with a gloss coat using 2100f & 2000ce, +F. My problem is I read somewhere that acetone is a good wipe down to remove sanding dust and improve penetration into small air gaps along the cutline. I'm guessing I got onto a poly thread not epoxy.
Long story short, the last coat of epoxy is not curing. Any tips for remediation are much appreciated.
I’ll be more polite. Your ratios were off. Or you didn’t mix properly. The acetone should not have been used, but that is not the problem you describle.
First let it sit out in the sun or in warm spot to see if you can get it to cure any more but if its hasnt yet it probably wont. So scrape most of the gloss coat off with a razer and then try to sand the remaining resin off but be aware that the tacky resin will take on the color of your sandpaper until its all removed. If you apply a little heat (like a hairdryer) to the epoxy it will probably make it easier to remove and more plyable. Whatever you do dont just put another coat over it and only use acetone to wipe off your squeege/hands when your done using epoxy.
Acetone eats EPS foam. If you have pin holes and you use Acetone you make problems. Acetone eats cheap gloves that most surfers use. If you wear cheap gloves and use acetone you make problems. Bare hands and Acetone...not good...acetone in the blood with thinned out resin not good........No solvents with RR Epoxy resin...easy....
Like the other say: Do not use acetone, but that is not your problem.
I’ve used acetone with epoxy in the past and never had curing issues. But do not use it! I believe it is because of health issues rather than epoxy issues. (correct me here if I’m wrong)
Scratch that last conclusion. First of all, my disclaimer for my first botched coat of epoxy is: “It was early morning and I had a new lady love staying over for the first time, waiting for me to come back to bed”… That said, I’m 99% sure I put 10 oz resin on the heater, made final preperations, and then added the f and 5 more oz of resin instead of hardener. DET da de, I’m concluding this because the sticky mess has been nearly completely removed with a squeegee and car wash soap.
White viegar and a good Plexiglass scraper are your two biggest friends. Just make sure you feed them well with plenty o’ beer cause it takes a bit of time.
The fix went like this: checked the jugs, double resin. I squeegeed it off with soap and water, denatured alcohol rub down, light hand sandpaper @ 150 grit, denatured alcohol rub down, and reapplied, no worse the ware.
