Ok, I have no idea about concaves, vees, hulls, whatnot. I’ve read all the threads about them, but I’m concerned about what I should incorporate into my 6’9" egg. Preference doesn’t help me here, because I have no clue about any of it, so I’ll just run down all the info, and maybe someone can help me with what I should do and where to do it.
Board: 6’9" x 16.5" x 21.5" x 14.5" x 2.75"
Nose Rocker: 5 3/8"
Tail Rocker: 1 15/16"
Fin setup: 2+1 (will probably ride it single fin and thruster)
Beach conditions: 2-4 crumblers (Sunset Beach, CA)
I’m mostly a front foot surfer.
I think that may be all the info to think about here. Everyone who knows about this stuff, please help me with accurate measurements. This is my first board so I’m going in this kind of blind. I have done alot of research, but maybe someone can be more clear.
Thanks in advance!
KG
i think i’d probably go single to double
Hey D.Drew,
first thing is to be sure your rocker is smooth and flowing. That way, any contour will telegraph what is already there and would have less of a chance to backfire on you. Also, you could do no contours at all and the board will still kind of work.
With that tail rocker, I’d say the board is too flat for any deep concave work. Best bet for a first board is flat up front flowing gradually to vee in the tail.
I would make this vee start about mid way and have a maximum vee located at the front fin (my guess this is going to be your basic pivot point). The max vee would be about 1/4 to 3/8" if your straight edge was laying flat on one of the vee panels.
After the max vee point the vee would quickly diminish so that there would be about 1/8" of vee at the tail (if it is a round tail then project the vee as if it was a 6" tailblock). These numbers are for the shape before it gets glassed as you are likely to lose a bit of vee because of the rail laps onto the bottom.
Totally agree with Plusone…but if you want to add a concave anywhere on this board do a double concave bonzer style ending at the tail. That would increase your internal rocker line.
Ok, so should I do a double to single concave, or a vee, or both? I guess I’m still a little confused. Also, can anyone give me a picture of what this might look like? I’ve been reading up on this topic, and I’m not sure I want to go the bonzer route. I’m thinking of setting it up thruster. I guess what I’m wondering is how integral is vee or concaves? I’m not looking to get crazy on this board, but I want it to ride nicely. Again, please be patient with me, this is my first time at this and I’m just trying to absorb it all before I begin.
Okay, your mind is made up. You will make a flat-to-vee bottom, and you will like it. K.I.S.
I just finished shaping my first surfboard and now I’m glassing it myself ! I learned to glass glass before I took up shaping (This is my fourth glass job).
You ask some good questions that I can not answer. Listen to guys like Plus One. I recommend keeping it simple on the first board. I had plenty of trouble learning to use the tools of the trade like surforms, hand planes and this screen stuff that works like sand paper. Things like double concave and Vee bottom are for my future work. My board is a mini log but the blank could have been used for an egg. The rocker and nose concave were already there straight from Clark Foam. I went to all the local shops and looked at the boards I liked before I started shaping. You can do it !
Have fun!

dont be fooled, flat bottoms work!!!
Trying to absorb it all will…take quite a while, keep it simple(great advice already given…) …Flat will work great…add/try other things when you are more comfortable with shaping.Blending concaves and vee’s into the shape is not easy. I would go with a single box and side bites though…no thruster eggs(just my opinion…) they just don’t have a good feel or glide…but will surf fine. Main thing…have fun…
