just fill in the box and put a glass-on fin in. It’s really simple, just make sure you sand down the tail area so you get a strong bond. And use plenty of rope if you have a noseriding fin or it will start to crack around the base. And next time you do a box always but a fin in it when you’re lining it up so you know it’s straight.
I doubt the spin out problem has much to do with the fin box issue but it might. I’d try moving the current fin back a bit or modify it by cutting away the trailing part of the base so it’ll slide back farther in the box. Maybe get a bigger fin?
Within close enough tolerances, I doubt there are many fin boxes that are installed perfectly. I’ve seen some tweaked fin box installations in pro boards sitting in showrooms and have stuffed up a few of my own. It didn’t seem to affect the ride much if at all.
IMO you may be chasing diminishing returns trying to get it “perfect” at this point.
1/16" ? That will not be causing spinouts. Maybe the fin is the issue. Try a different fin, and like the guys have said, move it back a bit in the box.
i’ve found that low hard rails in the last 2 to 3 feet of a long board leads to the sort of spin outs described. a fin with a wide base and lots of depth may help some. the installation of side bites may also help.
typically a noserider would have 50 - 50 or raised rails in the last 2 -3 feet.
i just re-read your initial post (now i don’t think i ever really read it the first time…sorry), and if your spinouts occur primarily when going right, and the box is toed a bit to the right, then that would NOT facilitate the spinout. fat low rails are the likely culprit, and you can counter that by putting a big ol’ noserider fin in the back.
