HELP

Just finished a 9’ 4". (5th. longboard, been having trouble)

18.75 x 23 x 13.75 x 3

4.75 nose rocker

4.00 tail rocker all blended.

Low, high volume rails.

Problem is I cocked up putting in the fin box !!!

It points off to the right about 1/16" AND is slightly canted .

When nose riding, particularly going right, the tail spins out unpredictably.

Do you guys think it is the fault of the box and if so what can I do ?

Or is it just too much tail rocker. P.S. It turns great thuogh.

see post below

There’s a great thread going right now on box installs. Several vets have pointed out

that the best way to install the single box is with a fin or dummy in the box so you can

optically true it and avoid exactly the situation you’re in. But don’t feel too bad, I think

all of us have sunk a crooked box or two.

Mike

just fill in the box and put a glass-on fin in. It’s really simple, just make sure you sand down the tail area so you get a strong bond. And use plenty of rope if you have a noseriding fin or it will start to crack around the base. And next time you do a box always but a fin in it when you’re lining it up so you know it’s straight.

Hi Pete -

I doubt the spin out problem has much to do with the fin box issue but it might. I’d try moving the current fin back a bit or modify it by cutting away the trailing part of the base so it’ll slide back farther in the box. Maybe get a bigger fin?

Within close enough tolerances, I doubt there are many fin boxes that are installed perfectly. I’ve seen some tweaked fin box installations in pro boards sitting in showrooms and have stuffed up a few of my own. It didn’t seem to affect the ride much if at all.

IMO you may be chasing diminishing returns trying to get it “perfect” at this point.

Putting a fin in the box will also prevent shrinking from the heat, but I’m with John I doubt that 1/16 would make much difference.

1/16" ? That will not be causing spinouts. Maybe the fin is the issue. Try a different fin, and like the guys have said, move it back a bit in the box.

i agree with john mellor.

i’ve found that low hard rails in the last 2 to 3 feet of a long board leads to the sort of spin outs described. a fin with a wide base and lots of depth may help some. the installation of side bites may also help.

typically a noserider would have 50 - 50 or raised rails in the last 2 -3 feet.

Thanks guys all the input is graet.

I must say I thought of routing out the box but wanted to see if you guys thought it was worth it !!!

Seems not really

Have tried moving fin back which helps a bit but will now try a larger fin.

NEXT board will have softer tail rails and perhaps less O.A. rocker

i just re-read your initial post (now i don’t think i ever really read it the first time…sorry), and if your spinouts occur primarily when going right, and the box is toed a bit to the right, then that would NOT facilitate the spinout. fat low rails are the likely culprit, and you can counter that by putting a big ol’ noserider fin in the back.
