Hemp Cloth for Glassing

A lot of people like myself are messing about with fabrics.

As a source of hemp fabric down to 7.5 ounce weave the best available is from www.ecolution.com

The strands are long fibre as opposed to short strands in Hemp from China and India.

As well as that, the Hemp produced by Ecolution is entirly organic, using no pesticides or herbicides.

Hemp is a natural, renewable and ecological source.

They have a distributer in the US also.

As a final coat, for the Cloth, I’d highly reccommend this cloth for use with Epoxy Resins, and the ecolution gang are really nice folk to deal with.

Sweet I got myself a pair of Hemp slippers the other day. A hemp Mal would be cool to go with it’!

I went to that site a while back and couldn’t find any prices. I’m not ready to buy any now but I might in the future. Do you have any ballpark prices?

Heres a question! if it is illegal to grow Marrawana (sorry 'bout da spelling) how do they get hemp?

Josh.

I’m not sure, but I think you can grow hemp as long as the THC level is below a certain threshold.

I checked the hemp web site. Does any one have pricing on hemp?Has anyone glassed with it? If so how does it take resin. Will it wet out?A cut line would be best to hide the lap. Is it as strong as fiberglass? Gordon

…and what colour is it ?

Does it have a slight brownish colour to it …I seem to remember Jim Banks’ boards were browny coloured ?

How is it for ‘bending’ around the rails when glassing ?

Could you lay up fins with it ?

And, lastly…do you know if west australia gets the stuff ?

thanks for any help !

Hemp is not mairjuana. Although it grows the same leaves and looks a lot like marijuana it isn’t. The chemical, THC is not present in this plant and is legal throughout the world.

I’ve got some samples on the way from a clothing fabric supplier.

The lightest this company has is 6oz, not sure of price yet.

Has anybody had a go at glassing with hemp? What were the experiences?

I’m interested in using it, but don’t know the pros / cons

I haven’t used hemp before, but I’m guessing that using hemp cloth will make the board a whole lot stronger than regular fiberglass cloth due to the fact that is a natural substance that will absorb more rersin and will make the board stronger. I hope to try using hemp when I do my Lam process in the future.

Not with hemp, but I glassed the inside of my hollow wooden fish with a single layer of cotton fabric and epoxy resin. Seems to be pretty strong, but haven’t tested the board yet. Jack

Hi Jo-El Hemp and marijuana IS actually the same plant, marijuana is the flowers(buds) of the plant and the cloth is made from the fibers of the plant.

I’ve used two different types and it seems the ligther the easier to lam with. The first time it was on a PU blank and the second time on EPS. On EPS I had delam problems, I think it is becase I didn’t put any vent on it. But other than the delam problem it’s pretty strong and has different flex than fiberglass. I am going to experiment more with hemp in the near future.

Hey Jimmy,

My buddy ran into you a few weeks ago. Surfer/ dij player with dreds named Rich. He told me I should get in touch with you to find out about getting board building materials. Anyway, i assume it’s you, since he told me it’s a Japanese guy named Jimmy who makes boards with hemp. Can’t be too many of them around, can there?

Yes,It’s me rich ran into. And I am happy you made it here…tons of info if youre going to make boards.

What kind of materials are looking for, Clarkfoam or EPS, polyesterresin or epoxy…

Any way if youre bying from overseas both fiberglass supply and Foam e-z ships to japan but you’ll have to pay customs and do lots of paperwork.

If not contact maneuverline, inc there in both Osaka and tokyo.

Where do you surf in shikoku?

Hey, I’m intrigued. As you are the only person on here that has used the stuff, did it wet out like glass? as i assume it is tan in colour, have you tried to tint it? how much more resin does it absorb, as compared to regular glass - say you use 12oz of poly resin on a board with glass?

thanks,

Hey Jimmy,

Yeah, I’ve done a little lurking on here, hadn’t done any posting until recently. Now I know where to come when I come up against problems building boards. And I’m sure there will be many…

Looking for Clark foam, poly resin. I’ll check maneuverline, thanks!

I surf mostly in Kochi, Nakamura area.

Would love to see you work with hemp cloth, or other materials for that matter. Maybe some day I could check out your workshop. ?

Hi there nativeson! I don’t think I’m the only person that have used hemp around here.

I havent tried to tint it because that would ruin the beauty of the hemp IMO.

Hemp is quite thirsty…I only used poly for hemp once and cant remember how much I used. I use Epoxy now…much easier to handle and longer workingtimes which you need when working with hemp. I use about 300- 350grams of epoxy for one layer (6 foot board).

The come out pretty resonable in weight using eps. and stronger.

hi Yoshio !

I hope you and Susej will meet one day .It’s great you’re both at Swaylocks now !!.

On the hemp board front , please can you post a photo of your hemp board ?
