hemp experiment number 1

i was [img_assist|nid=1040996|title=hemp|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=75|height=100][img_assist|nid=1040996|title=hemp|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=480|height=640][img_assist|nid=1040997|title=hemp|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=480|height=640]givin this organic hemp cloth. to test out . the weave was desighned for the lamination of boats. never been used on boats or surfboards. i just did the bottom lam of a 6’0" by 18 1/2 short board. iam very stoked on the results so far it sucked up alot of resin but wraped around the rails like a dream. more pics of this totaly recyclable board soon

I was gunna glass my board…

BUT I GOT HIGH

Haha ok enough funny stuff. Why is it dark?, is that the normal colour??. Ifi ts good enough for boats it should be sweet for boards. Just one layer??

i dont know that much about it . i think its been dyed i only put done one layer bottom one top i might wrap a layer of 2 0z. on top

Looks crazy, looking forward to hearing more about how it goes. It looks… like it’s got a pretty loose weave? Or is that just a weird impression from the photos? What’s the weave look like up close, is it like a flat fibreglas weave or is it bumpier? Props to you for trying something totally random!

Looking good sonnycheeba!

I glassed few hemp boards years ago and found it to be a hassle and I wasn’t happy with the end result.

Sounds like you’re using a different hemp cloth then I was because I had a hell of a time wrapping the rails, especially in the nose and tail curves. Had to cut “V” reliefs to make it work.

Also, it didn’t sand well at all. Too sinewey or something but sandpaper wouldn’t cut the fibers, just push them over.

You could see every overlap of cloth after hotcoating.

Stuff’s pretty strong though.

Hope you have more success than I did with hemp. It’s good to see guys challenging themselves and conventional knowledge.

thanks brian!

the only info i could find about glassing with hemp was on your site. and read what you said about wraping the rails and sanding . so thats what i was worried about for sure. i did a few small tests with scrap eps and resin research and . seemed to work preatty good. the one thing my buddy said was the hemp strands were twisted before woven. maybe that helped . but i made one relief cut on the nose and two on the tail . i had no lifting of the laps. layed flater than my attemps with 6 0z. cloth. but i should have taped off the deck because you will see the lap on the deck side. but for the deck lam . i just finished taping off the rails so i will be able to pin stipe to there. iam thinking off painting the deck to hide the lap on the deck. i just laminated the top so i post more progressin pics later.

Hey Sonny!

I know you have a lot more experience than I do…but I have done a few boards with hemp…if I can help you at all, or you want to bounce ideas off somebody, please feel free to contact me.

lets see some pics todd . and how did you find sanding the laps. after the lam . the texture is really rough . wouldnt need wax. but would proly shred you if you wernt wearing a wet suit. i am sure the hotcoat will fill that in.

Depends on the material. I sand the material that we use smooth. I think the trick is…don’t be afraid to sand the material…if that makes any sense.

For the bottom, I use a grinder connected to a speed control at a slower speed for the edges and then sand the lap smooth.

If you lay the deck patch to the edge of the lap on the deck you dont need to sand hardly at all.

Before the hotcoat I have the board sanded smooth so I dont have all the broblems with pitting.

But all of this is based on the material I use…there are many different kinds.

I don’t know if these techniques would be universal.

I’ll try to get some pics to post up tomorrow.

Yeah, hey…

The hemp can come like sackcloth, or t-shirt stretch…

A crew in Byron Bay named Wavelite used the stretch kind…the centre stringer was recessed, creating a groove into which the cloth was pushed to lock it, then stretched over to poke it into the other side, hence glassing the board half-half. Problems meant that it had to be done over with conventional glass anyway.

The colours were dyed, and the tie-dye fitted the Byron scene well!

ya i remember those wavelite boards from byron my buddy sonny fisher had one of them. i think they also made hemp skate decks.

The stuff we use is more like a linnen material…somewhere in the middle of what you described.

Still working out the details and experimenting, but this stuff is working pretty well.

It lays like 6oz glass but without fraying

Looks like she’s the ugly girl with a great body…Throw in a nice hair cut and some make up…tight jeans and cute clothes…Pretty smile…good outlook on life…you might have a winner…

Looking forward to a ride report…

I’m cheap…you did not talk about cost…Keep posting!

Ray
