Question for Herb - this is a bit off topic but curious minds want to know. I was recently in a surf shop and - lo’ and behold - there on the wall for all to see is a trippy skateboard deck apparently crafted by Herb. It looks to be about 32" long and I would describe it as a fairly narrow, incredibly pointed pintail made of plywood with some type of very glossy laminated surface.
The deck is very pretty and appears to be airbrushed (though it could be some type of tinting - tough to tell b/c I can only view if from about 6 ft due to where it is on the wall of the shop). The colors range from orange to yellow to green.
The deck has a bunch of handwritten verbiage - I couldn’t make it all out but was able to see something to the effect of “world downhill record holder” and “Acopalypse Now”.
Herb - does this deck sound familiar? I am sure that there is an interesting story behind it and I would be keen on passing it along to the shop owner if you would be willing to share it.
I will see what I can do, Chip, but I am not optimistic. Maybe I can snap a pic of it where it sits on the wall but ideally I would like to take it down from the wall to get better pics in the sunlight. I doubt the guy will let me take it down but I have to think that he would let me take a pic on the wall. Especially if I can offer to give him the background of the deck in exchange for a pic. Herb? You there?
One of my decks ?..which shop ? Basically red (red railed)?
Hard to say what or Wat about it w/o knowning which one.
George Orton has a real sick racer of mine, complete…that is if he hasn’t sold it…I gave it to him as a gift(it was a thank you for all the skate times we had together).
If it’s the deck I think it is …I traded it to Jimmy over at sports Warehouse in Orange,Ca. some 10 years ago.W/o positive ID I can’t real say much more. But thank you for the info provided…you know you’re getting old when they hang you works on the wall…lol.Herb
I went thru my archives here at home and low and behold is a 39" x 9.5 " downhiller.I believe it’s the same board that’s hanging in the surfshop.
It’s 7 ply applewood, fiberglassed and airbrushed on the blank as well as airbrushed on the hotcoat. Then glossed and polished.I raced that board locally for a couple years with speeds up to 56mph.
Tell the shop owner to contact me for more info.Herb
