Hey Glassers: Weight of gloss coat?

I’ve been asked many times, “What’s the extra weight added by a gloss coat vs. a sanded finish on a longboard”? I really don’t have an acurate answer. Any of you glassers out there care to field this one?

In the same flavour as above, I was checking out a website fibreglass.com and read about vacume baging techniques. They claim that the resign to cloth ratio for hand laminating is 100% and this can be reduced by using vacume baging to 50%. Is this the case for polyester resin?, if it is sounds like there is a big weight reduction to be gained from using vacume baging instead of hand laminating surfboards. just a thought Andy

its about a pound or so it varies by how well and thin your coats are, I always just hand them a gallon of resin when they ask and say…about that.

gallon? …quart?

Thanks ROOK, theQuart is right thats what i get for pretty much typing in my sleep at 1 am, Maybe I should hand them gallons though, that way there is no questions when the get the board, or maybe it will seem even lighter.

On a long board it really is a insignificant amount of weight. No one I know can tell the difference between an 18 lb and 19 lb board especially when there riding it. And an argument can be made for a heavier longboard riding better (at least thats my opinion) Anyhow gloss looks so pretty and shiny. -Jay

Howzit Resinhead, 18 or 19 lbs is quite heavy by our standards for a longboard even if it’s glossed, I try to keep them to about 14 or 15lbs tops, sanded finishes under 14 lbs. I thin my gloss resin, this makes for a smoother gloss which doesn’t require a lot of sanding before it gets rubbed out. All things considered about 1 lb added for a gloss is in the ballpark. Thanks everyone! Approx one pound it is, one pound it will be!

Thanks Kokua, Actually I was using the weight as a point of reference only. I like my long boards olds school at about 23+ lbs. Big, wide, thick, lot’s of glass and lots of glide.

Howzit Resinhead, I bet not to many people take off on you. That board sounds like it’s a navy class cruiser. Keep surfin. Aloha, Kokua
