Hey Jim

I have alot of the old surf 60’s mags my older brother gave me years ago. Around the time of the Morey noseriding contest(munoz won, hynson second) I think it was Hynson and Frye that had blunt nosed boards that apparently worked real well, Hynson almost won! What/Who figured the almost squared off nose would optimize nose time, and why is that shape not more prevalant in todays retro popularity? Con Ugly comes to mind also!

It became very apparent to them that the curvature in the last 10-12" was of little importance as to how the board was going to ride. By keeping the nose wide and straight railed, it gave the board even more control with the longer rail line. The public has always been afraid of riding what does not reign popular with the masses. It is not neccesary for a board to have apealing lines to ride well. My Dobson noserider has a very straight rail line in the nose, with abrupt corners turning into a blunted tip. Jim

Jim THANKS, I RESPECT YOUR IDEAS AND EXPERIENCE, WHERE IN SD COUNTY DO YOU STOCK THAT SHAPE? IT SOUNDS REAL INTERESTING! DOBSON WAS MY LONGBOARD INSPIRATION IN THE LATE EIGHTIES AT THE CARDIFF REEF ALWAYS THOUGHT HIS POWERFUL STYLE LOOKED SO MUCH BETTER THAN JOEL’S SKINNY/WEAK STYLE, I SAW YOUR BREAKOUT LONGBOARD ADS THE OTHER DAY. WHAT IS BEHIND THE HAOLE GUY NICKNAME? INTERESTED.

I grew up a military brat and in 1961 my A.F. Dad got a new tour of duty at Hickam on Oahu. We had spent the previous 8 years on Cape Cod, Mass. at Otis AFB.In one day I went from being a 14 year old knowing nothing about Hawaii, racism or surfing, to being a “fucking haole”! So for the next 4 years, it was like I had no name when around locals, just “hey haole guy”. My high school pals that I stayed in contact with, would call me and the first words would be “hey haole, Fal Loa gon’ keek you ass” That was 40 years ago, I never lost that feeling for Hawaii and surfing. My workmanship can be seen at Oceanside Surf and Sport, Surf Ride and Encinitas Surf Boards. I made a 9’0" Dale Model noserider for myself, it is a strictly small wave board , 3-4’ and under. They don’t ride bigger waves for beans, but that’s not what I intended them for. A true ankle snapper model! When running to the tip is all the waves have to offer. Jim
