HEY Kokua!! Question on ZIG PENS...

Hey Kokua!!

I got a recommendation from you to try Zig Pens and was just wondering if the woodcraft Zig pens are the right ones – --The description on them says waterbased pigment ink, but not sure if they are the right type of zig pen for work on boards…If not, which Zigs work best?

Thanks!!

Howzit Zosurf, Those woodcraft zig pens were not available to me, but since they are a water based pigment ink they should do the trick. Since I no longer have access to any zig pens I refill my old ones with india ink which works great, like a felt tipped rapidiograph. Try a test just to make sure they work. Aloha, Kokua

I looked at those in a store and for some reason that escapes me now, I thought they might NOT work (had xylene in them?) You might just want to buy one or two as testers. Please let us know if they work out, eh?..

Thanks to Kokua, my pins have been great for the last year+. I use two different Zig pens. One has a grey shaft called Zig Textile Marker with Encre Pigment Ink. It has a soft brush tip at one end. The other is the Zig Calligraphy with pigment ink - acid free and has an off-white/tanish shaft. The wide tip (5 mm.) is a hard felt - doesn’t flex - but seems to lay on thicker. I’ve had great success with these as opposed to Posca. I always spray a light coat or two of clear acrylic over the pins prior to glossing. Here, I thank Herb for turning me on to Dutch Boy spray vs. Krylon. It’s vastly superior and half the price at K-mart.

My most recent board’s pins came out so nice and it rides so nice I figure I should call it Kokua

Howzit Pete, one of the best things about Zig pens is you don't have to spay any clear sealer over them before glossing. The reason I liked the zigs was that the pin lines didn't lift like Posca pins do when glossing. The only way to remove dried zig pins is with acetone or sanding, great stuff. Aloha, Kokua

Kokua - All I can say is “Once stung - twice shy.” After disasters with Posca pins, I hesitate to take chances but, I trust your experience and judgement more than mine and will follow your advice.

I owe you for the tip last year and would be glad to send you a few pens if you like as the local art supply has all colors. E-mail me @ pthsurf@hotmail.com.

Thanks - Pete

Hey Pete,

Where can you purchase Zig pens?

ive been using ZIG postmaster pens and yea they work greast I have been glossing 1/2 hr after the app…I get thenm in portland at the local art supply store thanks kokua…I got that idea from you.Aloha

I used the Zig caligraphy pens the ones with the wedged tip on one side and the fine tip on the other for a pen line but it took forever to dry. Finally sprayed acrylic over it but parts still came off after a surf. What happened?
