Fast Eddie was originally from Maywood? I remember he lived in an apartment complex(can’t remember the name) that was near the the 605 freeway close to the 405-605 junction.Dewain Surfboards was on State St.,then it was Eliminator Boats. Inland Surf Shop in Downey (Firestone Blvd)was the home of Phil Surfboards. The owner was Phil Sauers who went to H.P. and hung around with my older brother. Back in the early 50’s my family would take our trailer to Doheny every summer for 2 months(before they closed it for camping).I remember Phil showing up with 2 balsa boards, he would tell me to stay off the boards.Wrong thing to say to a kid, that was the start of my surfing career at 5 years old, later on when I was 16 he gave me a job doing repairs for the shop. Pete Peterson opened the Huntington Park Surfshop on the corner of Gage and Gentry St… I lived on Gentry so I was at the shop( think I was about 10 at the time) every day drooling on the boards. Hasta Luego,Kokua

I’m doing a 9’6" classic for one of my shapers and he decided to do the sand job to save himself a little $. I gave him some facts about sanding a to be pinlined and glossed board. Well he decides to rush it and do most of it with 80 grit instead of 100 or 120 grit. Well I spent approx. 2 1/2 hrs. doing the old 2 razor blde scrape trick on the pin line spider web bleeds ( used a Posca pen, no more zig pens at the craft store), even though I sanded the pinline area with 220 grit before putting down the pinline. Can’t wait to jump down his throut today when I see him. Aloha,Kokua

This is getting to be a trip. Fast Eddie was originally from Maywood? …Yes, Eddie was a Bell grad.He lived in Maywood, with his famous BIG DADDY!(GET IT).I heard tales of Groucho Marx frequented the Bell/Maywood area(he dated a gal from Maywood).I’m sure by now we’re boring the crap out of other builders. SOON we will sit down and talk,my wife is hinting of a hawaiian vacation, hit kiki, then on to Kauai, finish off on the Kona coast, maybe. My door is always open to you

…That’s how it goes you know. The shaper that never glasses thinks he’s one up on everyone, until you make him sand his own stuff…then you get to watch him, curse, and moan while he burns all the high spots off, down to the foam. …You should have made him shoot the pinlines, naw…it probably would have made you sea sick looking down them.Herb

I hear you about letting him shoot the pinline, it would’ve looked like it was shot with a shotgun. When it comes to any kind of art work he’s totally lost. Kokua
