Hobie Corky Carroll Mini Advice

Hey all,

I have the opportunity to pick up a Hobie Corky Carroll Mini surfboard from a friend for a couple hundred bucks and was wondering what the general consensus was on the boards worth (not so much monetarily but in terms of time and effort to make it rideable).

I don’t have pictures but i’ll do my best to describe the board.

7’ Corky Carroll mini both deck and bottom “reverse flower graphic” (green surrounded by foam colored flowers). I am not positive if the color is in the resin or on the foam. The board is in rough shape! Bottom looks to be about 80% delam. A few major rail gashes that have been repaired (poorly). And various nicks and bruises on the deck.

The fin doesn’t look like the original fin. The wishbone box is still in place but it looks like a different fin was possibly glassed into the box (a coin was resined on the deck where the screw would normally go through).

Couple questions:

Is this board worth picking up for a couple hundred bucks and trying to restore it?

I understand the original fin is often worth more than the board, does not having the original fin make it just an old beater not worth its weight in foam?

Would you recommend completely stripping the glass and reglassing (losing some of the original shape in the process) or is this one of those things that its best to get it water tight and surf as is?

What are the chances I would completely lose the graphic and logos if i reglassed?

I know all of this is difficult without any pictures, but any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

You know the old saying, opinions anre like A-holes, everyone has one?  Here is my take on the CC mini.  It was a transitional board, back when boards were first starting to go short. It was not a very "good' transitional board.  It seems to my memory, that Hobie just cut down a longboard, made it wider and thiner, and called it the new thing. I had a girl friend who bought one. I rode hers, and I didn't like it at all.

If it was in great shape, it might be worth something just as a period piece, but in the condition you describe, I wouldn't put 10 cents into it.  However, YMMV.

Howzit soulbazz, I agree with cosmo, save your money and either put it towards a new board or wait for a better retro or classic to come along since they are out there. Aloha,Kokua

I’ll add a third opinion in agreement with cosmo and kokua. I would not pay more than 25 bucks given how you describe the condition. As far as stripping and re-glassing, once that happens it’s no longer the board it started life as. It becomes just a recycled blank.

My first “short” board was an 8’4" Mini. I liked it quite a bit. But, it probably was due to it being a foot shorter than my previous board, and at that time I only had a few years experience which didn’t give me grounds for a real solid comparison.

Excellent. Thank you all for the advice/comments they were very helpful.
