I am very impressed by the elegant hollow wood surfboards that I have seen. Many of them look like they require a good amount of equipment and tools.
I set out to build hollow wood surfboards on a budget, in the backyard, from lumber store materials or reclaimed wood, and with basic hand tools (namely a jig saw and a handheld belt sander). No CAD. My aim was minimal investment in tools or equipment.
Have built 4 boards, 2 of them work great (a 5’6" quad and an 8’ singlefin) , 2 of them did not work.
If this method interests you, here is a a link to a video:
The board looks very cool! I notice the familiar landmark in the video maybe we could meet up for a surf someday. I’ll bring a hws I made and we can compare notes.
I have made a few in my day but sold most of them, I still have one I haven’t used in years, looked watertight & ready last I checked. Its a little small for me now (7’). I’ve been sticking to 8’ and up since my hip surgery, but i’m game to give it a go.
DM me if interested
BTW, do u know my buddy Randy? Or Nicky? (dang can’t find any pics of Nicky!)Tell em Huck sez hi if you see them. The early morning paddle out was me taken by Mike “I am Torquato” a few years back.
Ok cool. It’ll have to be after the first of the year, but I will contact you and we can set a day & time. I’ve been thinking about maybe building another hws using some new ideas or refinements I have dreamed up since my last one.
BTW please post more pics of your process or your finished boards if you are able.
