My website still isn’t doing what it’s supposed to, and that is frustrating…I try these different things, but it takes 10 hours to upload the site through my 56k modem…so I contacted the web host… Here’s what I sent to my web host… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi. Thanks in advance for getting my web-site back to normal. I’ve had www.hollowsurfboards.com since Jan. ‘03. Recently I got a new computer. I haven’t changed anything on my site since Aug. ‘03. Today I tried to update my website. With my 56k modem it took 10 hours.uggh. After the very long upload, I viewed my site, I was bummed out.Instead of the cool, and colorful homepage, I saw an “Index” page. My problem is, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated my site.I need to know the procedure and more importantly, the address I need to use to get my site up-loaded.Any other suggestions are much appreciated. I created my site with “Front Page” if that helps. Thanks again. Paul Jensen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Updated: January 22, 2004, 9:45 am by Support] Hi Paul, The reason your homepage resolves to a directory listing is because you do not have an index.html page. Index.html is the page that the server looks for to display first in a directory. If there is not an index.html page, the server displays a directory listing. I’m not real familier with frontpage, but I assume it automatically creates the appropriate file extensions for you. Which directory did you upload the new files to? Is it the one you called “Why_doesn’t” Best regards, Nick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Updated: January 26, 2004, 11:04 am by pauljensen at 209.168.20.82] When I’m ready to re-publish my web site, what is “the location to publish the web to” …???.. Each time I guess at one it takes a long time to see if I guessed right…So far I’ve guessed wrong twice… Paul -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Updated: January 26, 2004, 8:56 pm by Support] Hi Paul, Sorry for the delay in response. Please upload to http://hollowsurfboards.com. Please let me know if you need anything else. Best regards, Nick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Updated: January 27, 2004, 11:38 am by pauljensen at 209.168.20.47] When I tried to upload to http://hollowsurfboards.com, there was an error message… " The server you are publishing to does not have FrontPage Server Extentions installed, and therefore does not support publishing via HTTP." “To continue publishing, specify a location that will work with FTP” What’s next…???.. Paul -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Updated: January 27, 2004, 12:47 pm by Support] Hi Paul, I have re-installed the extensions. Please try it again and let me know if it still doesn’t work. Best regards, Nick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- …So I tried it again, and somehow the connection to the server was unexpectadly disconnected after 8+ hours…Before it fully loaded…GRRRRRR…And I’m not sure if it would have worked after all…GRRRR… …What I’d like to do is put the contents of my website on a CD, send it, along with the necessary log-in and password, to someone with a the expertise and a FAST intenet connection and have them get the website back up…Once it’s up, I have no problems editing or making changes, it’s just getting it back on-line is my problem… Paul http://www.hollowsurfboards.com
Hi Paul, First, see if you have somewhere on your 'puter, a copy of WsFTP or any FTP program. If you don’t, then http://gwi.tucows.com/preview/195136.html ( click on the link below) will get you a copy. It’s much less time downloading that once than uploading the whole site every time you make one small change. Ok, once you have that installed, log in to the FTP server at your ISP, http://hollowsurfboards.com or whatever, using your password and everything. Then, upload only the html or htm files, not the whole site with all the graphics and pictures and everything. Those graphics are apparently there already. If you need to change just a few things around, not a problem. WSFtp will also continue if your connection goes down, unlike what you’re using now. Hope that’s of use doc… http://gwi.tucows.com/preview/195136.html
Paul, just sent you an email. Let me know if I can help. I’d concur with doc and use an external FTP app like WS-FTP or AbsoluteFTP.
Unless you want to do some drastic changes in the design of your website, it should be simple to organize your site’s hierarchy and fix the links with Notepad and upload with a basic FTP program. I’ll offer my help in addition to a multitude of others.
dreamweaver… its real easy and then just use explorer to update individual pages http://www.feraldave.com/history.htm
