home grown #00002

carl here,

and its time for round two.

It was my birthday on the 9th of november, which was just the other week, so i am now 17,

anyway most other kids my age were getting MP3 players, dvd,s and other such things for their birthday’s, but not me, for my birthday it was off to oceanfoam in dromana again to pick up a 6’6" kneeboard blank for my second attempt at a fish.

This board will be like my first board but with more refined dims and shape.

heres the blank in all its glory, with the shape cut out, no messing around here.

nice and thick

now we can get into some shaping.

time to mow.

with my last board i didnt use an electric planer as much as i would have liked to as of the huge amount of mess they create. This got me thinking. I have seen other peoples vacum setups on this site and decided to copy them, backyard style. heres what i ended up with.

Vertically suspended vaccum cleaner, duct taped to our makita planer.

worker a treat.

I looked around on the internet for the vaccum attatchment like the ones they sell on foam-ez, but came up dry, so i settled for duct tape, it was way cheaper and did the same job. The hose did get in my way a bit, nothing to cry about though.

On my first board I didn’t use any side lighting at all, this left me with a lopsided and wavy deck that went up and down, for this board though I asked my dad what would be the best option for lighting, he came back one night after work with this old aquarium light that he had in his shed. It is only on one side, and i dont know the exact height to have it placed but it showed the high and low spots perfectly.

cheap and easy.

Hey Carl! Good on You! Like your vacume set up. But Boy is your Mom going to be Pissed when she can’t find the vacume cleaner! And when she does boy are you in for it.!!! Aloha Wood_Ogre

thanks man,

its ok though, i’ll just say the dog did it.

been doing a little bit of shaping today, heres what happned.

the only problem with shaping in the garage and using the side light is that you have to wait till 9 o’clock to start shaping.

this board looked pretty good under normal light, this pic shows how good the side lights really are. high and low spots every where.

very rough shaped concave

after ten minutes of chasing shadows, perfect.

Happy belated by the way.

Looks good for #2 for sure. I’m a huge fan of making due with what you got. Is that a black light? If so, i think it’s only proper that your fish be very retro.

That’s aaaa…unique vaccume system there homey !Herb

heres the progress, the bottom has been glassed, I did it in 6oz with a dark blue pigment and a little light blue swirled through it. Pretty happy with the outcome, the cut lap was clean and there was no air bubbles, couldnt be happier.

heres the blank before glassing.

deck taped off for the cutlap.

and the finished result.
