Home made flat water paddleboard's from LB blanks?

Hey guys, i just got back from taking the kids down to the park at the lake, which is only a few hundred metres from my house. Everytime i go there i think about using a longboard blank to make a flat water SUP/prone paddle board. I would not be taking it in any waves, purely for the lake. THe biggest blank i can get is a 10'4 x 19 1/2nose x 25mid x 15 3/4 tail x 3 3/4 thick. I would basically make a template that would remove as little width from the blank as possible, so it would be close to the dimensions i just posted. There is a paddleboard rocker available ( 5 1/2n x 3.15 tail ). Just 6 x 66 glass as its flat water only.

At first i'd probably just paddle it around prone to get used to it, and just for fun really. But then i may get a paddle to go with it.

Im 80kg 5'9''.

What do you think?. and what would the rails/bottom need to be?.

Cheers

BTW i saw a guy on a hovercraft out on the lake, looked like he was having a ball!

I had a simular blank that I widen by placing two 2" foam insets on each side of the stringer.   If you can get your wide point around 28" it would make a much more stable SUP especiall at 3.75 inches thick.   If you are a great paddler, you might get away with 25" at 176 lbs.

D

make it so you can use it in the waves too mate...why not ???  have you tried a SUP before ?, maybe have a go first, not easy at all.....

I am with UncleD on width and thickness. before I could get “real” SUP blanks, I made those two out of a Burford 11’3" with 4" thickness and almost 27" wide and they were “usable” but not the real thing:

I have been paddleing a board 25 in wide  2 hours a day for more than a year and it is still as unstable now as it was then which mean your experience in not going to make it any more stable. I would say a minimum of 28 inches. The rocker isn't as important for flat water but low rocker with flat tail paddles faster . To much kick in the nose just pushes water. uncled is 100% right on his advice.

Ok thanks guys. I'll try for plan "B". I'll grab a 9'2'' blank and make myself a longboard for the small/fat days.I did find n 11'3'' x 27'' x 4 7/32'', but the cost of the blank ( not including postage for something that long 1000km's away ) is crazy.

Cheers guys.

Balsa that looks very nice mate!

Everything that balsa does looks nice. !!!! He's The Man!!!

Inserting thousands of blushing smileys here…

Thanks, guys!
