Homemade wax Ehow?

Found this randomly on google- Have any of you make homade wax? If so would this process make a usable wax?

High school in the 70’s.

Gulf Wax, Crayolas, Vaseline and a few drops of Dad’s Aqua Velva melted in a sauce pan on a hot plate, then poured it into an ice cube tray.

I started making my own wax after reading Wood Ogre's recipe. I use bee's wax from a local keeper (about $15 to $20 a pound) and add diatomaceous earth for swimming pools as a binder and essential oils for scent. Mr. Ogre stated he uses "food grade"  earth but I don't know what the advantage is to that. Bee's Wax is the best I've come across. Years ago there was a product called; "Killer Beeswax" for surfboards and was the best. What I make is close enough and works very well.

ps. The water is not warm here. It ranges from 50 deg. F to 70 deg F at it's warmest. Don't know how it would perform in the tropics. It remains soft and sticky for long periods.

Howzit swanny,

As a person who manufactured surf wax for the better part of a decade with a lot of success, I can tell you that making homemade wax will be expensive and somewhat dangerous. If you insist on continuing (I did), then the best thing to do is get an electrically heated dip casting tank: http://waage.thomasnet.com/category/dip-coating-pots. Then you will need an electric egg beater to whip up the concoction. As for ingredients, some are easier to acquire than others… you need 125-143F melt point paraffin, microcrystalline wax, and some petrolatum (vaseline) to make the base. Tblank is correct that dirt fillers such as diatomaceous earth are used to make the wax “bump up”, though if I  were you I would look for fillers with a screen mesh of 325 as they will provide the best bumps. Lastly, and this is the most important and hard to come by, you need some polybutene resin. This resin is ultra sticky and makes the wax stick like glue. This is the dirty little secret of the best sticky waxes on the market. Make sure you wear a respirator, protective eyewear,  and heavy gloves. Keep the temperature of the liquid concoction below 215F and work in a well ventilated space away from natural gas or combustibles.

Good luck and be safe.

Hello Guys

I know this is an old topic but I’m starting to make the natural wax, and I’m dealing with some problems…

The wax is spreading too much and it’s not making the usual bumps on the board (I’m not putting any filler yet)…

The diatomaceous earth will prevent the board from being slippery like that??? What can I do??

I appreciate any help!

Thanks a lot!!
