How would these fins perform on a 9’ performance longboard rounded pin. What conditions suit this fin? Anyone have experience with them and where can they be bought?
Only place I recall having seen them for sale is in a shop in Haleiwa, I almost bought one several times but they were expensive ($75?). Hmm I also recall a post, may still be in the archives, saying that they can be bought mail order from Cheyne in Oz… not sure about the latter. As for conditions, not for use in kelp. I have no idea how they work on a 9 foot board, but I once saw one used at Windnsea on a short board with good results (good rider!) If you get one make sure to post here how it works on your board…
OK, they say this fin works with longboards and is $45 australian. Sounds like a fun thing to try… http://www.cheynehoran.com.au/starfin.html
It is my main fin on a 9’6" semi-performance single fin longboard. It’s wicked fast. Noticable. Turns feel a little pivoty due to lack of rake. Easy to get accustomed to. Seems to noseride well. Doesn’t like leashes (not a problem) or seaweed. May add a lot of stress to your fin box. Get them from Cheyne’s website. May take a while; I think he handles all this stuff himself. Get one. -Rob Olliges
I saw a guy riding on of those fins at Ti tree bay Noosa. He was using it on a hobie egg. It was not suited to either the guys board or his style, i couldnt work out which.
I bought two from Chris Brock while I was in Oz, odd bloke but very interesting, he has been working on them in Lennox. Yes they work pretty good on longboards but you can’t use them anywhere that kelp may be a problem and leashes tend to get caught up on them too much. But hell for cheating on noserides they are fantastic. I bought mine for $60 aus. 3 years ago (when it was $1us for $1.98aus) lots of luck to you finding one here in the US but you might try locating one of the many Aus. surfshops, specifically in Lennox, Byron Bay, or even Ballina (maybe Maddog Surfboards Aus.) but I would email them to ask for one as I doubt you’d find it on any of their websites.
