I tried to look this up before posting and didn’t find anything but please bear with me if this has been posted.
Can I use a glue gun to set my glass-on fins on epoxy lam? I read that epoxy doesn’t stick to plastic but I wonder what type of effect it may have on hot glue once it cools?
I use hot glue quite a bit at work, and while it’s pretty good at physical bonds, it doesn’t seem to be making any chemical bond whatsoever. I wouldn’t depend on it for any structural strength, but it may be OK for just tacking into place. Just make sure the main load is taken up by the epoxy structure, and the hot glue doesn’t cover too much bonding area…
You know this is one of those instances that I would… technically… try to steer people away from, but I’ve seen it done on hundreds of boards (both polyester and epoxy) with no problem so…
SrPato, Aloha! I am a patcher, I have been patching since there were only glass ons, glue gun will stick the fin to the board easily! But structually this is not the way to go. If you want a better bond and still want to keep it simple use sun cure resin to tack on the fin. Fins that have been glued on pop off clean and the fins that have been resin on tear the whole bottom off…
Thanks everyone for your replies. Since I’m planning on using strictly to hold the fin in place and not as the primary adhesion to the board, I figure that it will be O.K.
What the heck? An experimental board deserves an experimental technique. Right?
I’ll let you know what happens.
I should finish the lam by Thursday afternoon. and hot coat by Saturday.
I Use hot glue from time to time but don’t like it very much. I use it in a pinch for a quick fix. The problem with it is that it can create a displacement of the two surfaces.
The 5 min epoxy works great w/ no displacement so to speak.
I’m with edgefins on this one. The problem I have had with hot glue is that it takes up too much space. ie: the fin sets up off the board a little. The only things that fills that space is resin and there is no resin sticking to the hot glue so that is just open space. Ambrose show me a Crazy glue type of stuff, I can’t remember what he called it, but it was fast took up no space so your fin was setting down on the glass where it should be.
