Dave, I respect what you have done in a hard market. Mate, please make your posts longer than than your speil, fairs fair, trust me it will look better to you too, cheers H.
…hello man,
but happens that there s other people that really want to shape or build boards or are craftmen or like to build with their hands something that others enjoy.
so the life is not only business.
Is very easy to “shape” or “build” n numbers of boards when:
shaper: thee machine
glass, sand, color work, put FCS fins (most new shapers don t even foiled at least some fins…) finish : by crew
put your hand on the heart and tell me how all these have to do with surfboards and the relation between 2 persons?
more in the business only side
if some want to be rich or like that better not to start with boards and start with a cloth marketing company and after few years (after growing) try to sell the brand to a Jewish guy (the guys own the fabrics business on most parts of the world)
Reverb, I DO respect you and your talent BUT…Different strokes for different folks, ya know.
Dave is a craftsman, Simple! + it looks to me like he might just have a bit more drive on the business side of things then some!..cash will be fine Dave or maybe a cheque
My 2 cents worth.
Now Reverb, send me some photos of those beautiful hand shaped Bonzers you do.
Cheers
I’m 59 now. A bunch of us ‘dinosaurs’ have a ton of history that would provide younger surfer/shaper/whatevers some interesting reading.
Regardless of what kids still in school think, history IS important because it provides the foundation for a base of knowledge.
There are a ton of creative people that belong to Swaylock’s that come from all different walks of life. Most of them are hobbyists or aspiring craftsman wanting to learn more or wondering if someone has tried some material or building approach before. I use it as a resource too, even though I ‘donate’ a lot of info for other’s consideration and/or use.
Like here’s one thought I flashed on yesterday: has anyone tried using CORK for a deck pad? I was opening a bottle of wine last night, and the thought hit me: well… yeah, this stuff would absorb shock really well, is plentiful, and light, AND has floatation! The first cork floors I ever saw was when I was in New Zealand, and they were fairly common…
Hmmmm?
…and that’s how stuff takes a life on Sway’s!
p.s. and the mate thing, yeah yeah but let’s not get gooey over it
…Yorky, I dunno man, I m not here to beat down the business of others but facts are facts
handshaping is the way to do surfboards for the surfers and machine is the business way Im not saying that one is good and the other is the evil…but we do not need megacorporations ideas in tiny industry like this one…that in a short period of time we all be fucked in a way or another.
in this case, in all these years in Swaylocks seems that he s more in a hurry to produce and make money and have a business system than be a craftman…
anyway here s a couple picts
Reverb, I’ll will reply with caution…
As I’m not sure how much of my personal life i really want public… But here goes, you have been judgmental of me so I’m out to defend or justify my actions.
I started making boards for payment in my early mid twentys, I have a couple other trades that I didnt much enjoy or want to continue with. I enjoyed/ enjoy the craft if making a board for a person whether it is my friend or my customer ( read paying person) since the ten years you have known me on swaylocks i lost a business partner in a terror attack , causing the business Venture to close & had a large debt to repay. have been married, had four children, lost one child in death, opened a shop, built a factory and purchased a shaping machine…( not all in correct order) This all required some money… I obtained that thru making surfboards. Along with this has been much mental terror & agony and hard work. The pain of losing a child is heavy for me but much worse for my wife who at times does spend days in her room sobbing. Along with looking after my current 3 children under 6 years old and having the closest family 2000km away, I think I have managed to maintain some sanity from the pleasure I get from making boards… In fact I know that whatever time I get to create something I can do it with my tools of choice… They may be evil or digital to you but they are a neccecity for me in my current life. You know if I was presented with the situation of creating a board from a block of foam and a couple basic home made tools in a remote location I will still make you one of the best boards you have ever had. I know this because I have done it a couple times already… I’m glad you enjoy your way, I will not judge you or think less of you. I like how and what I do making boards. in fact I’ve been fortunate enough to keep creating outside the box and am really stoked with my Dynocore project and the future I have in store for my perception of what people want to ride on waves. Even if it does cost $1000!
Oh thanks for the plug Yorky. I’ll get you a beer when I come up to the noosafest…
hey nock it of you guys’’

Dave, as I said before, I have a lot of respect for what you have done in a hard market, long time gone that anyone really gives a fuck about the shaping machines, I just dont like your sign off, it's a wank, you are doing it mate, you don't need that, cheers H.
H , have you seen DA in recent years?
First Off i have been visiting this site as a guest for over a year specifically to fine tune my shaping skills and knowledge. I must say Thanks to all who have contributed priceless business and how to information over the years.
Secondly, my 2 cents if anyone cares to read.
Everybody who is in business is IN BUSINESS for a reason regardless of the Industry. 90% of businesses see an avenue to produce profit out of a unit (ie sports equipment, service provided or whatevs) this is what drives the global economy today. 5% are in business to produce a product/service that is so phenomenal people will pay astronomical amounts of money to get it (innovations, good education). The last 5% are in business to flat out rip you off (of which none of whom are on Sways)
To be a good craftsman you must produce superior crafts but to be a successful business you must have the capability to profit from your art, craft, service or product. Choose your own side of a successful life (crafstmen/businessman) or be both.
I must say coming from experience more power to the entrepeneurial spirits who go after what they believe in and morally/ethically do business in these dire economic times.
Bustin fins loose and shooting even par!!!!!!!!
**"I am returning to the West Coast permanently June . I’ll look you up.
The few times I have been over, I have used a shaping room at Aloha
Glass in Westminster. " **
McDing did you every move back to the west coast?
kind regards,
surfding**
**
well mybe i worded that all wrong for i have little respect for that lot
**if i had any say board building would be a trade with boatbuilding qualification **
how many are ?
i learnt my trade from some of the best wooden boatbuilders in the world as well as respect something these egoo driven mob you talk of do not have?
for me i see it as art and i think thats the veiw off both bruce and reverb?
** in all the decades i have been through. (2 decades stand out’’ ) for the greatest change the sixtys were an enormous curve tetering on the edge of even more **
but the last decade i have seen a greater variant of everything surfboard than ever before
with boatbuilding tech lighting it up a 5lb board can be built strong enough to drive a car over
but when its all boiled down i love to pull out a nice p u blank and create something thats just a buz ‘’ i dont think that will ever go away
** WOOD IS GOOD
**
cheers huie
