I installed some fin plugs today and somehow didnt align them where i wanted them. I dont know how i did this wrong, must have been the resin fumes getting to my head or something. But, the left upper fin plugs of a quad i did are a little lower than they should be by about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. How big of an impact is this going to have on the way the board performs? I’m pretty sure im going to need to fix this, so what is the best way? drill out the old ones or something? i’ve attached a pic of the fcs stickers on the deck so you can kind of see what im working with.
Hi -
Your photo didn't show up when I viewed it and I don't even know what type of plugs you used but if I understand correctly, one method might be to route around ALL your plugs for insertion of high density foam reinforcements. If you determine exactly how far off your initial installation is, you can adjust the size of your high density inserts to completely cover any booboos.
Once the reinforcements are in, reroute for your fin plugs and reinstall same. You'll have some cleaning up to do for each plug but if you're careful and get all the old resin off, you should be able to reinstall all of them without having to buy new ones.
Just tell people it was planned that way... "to prevent future plug blow outs." It's a pain in the ass but if you do it carefully, no one needs to know of any screw up on your part and it'll look like it was all done on purpose.
If you started with FCS plugs, consider rerouting for the 'Fusion' style plugs - they have the high density reinforcements built in. You'll sacrifice the original plugs but they're not very expensive and you can use them in another project.
Yes, and I am having trouble visualizing what you mean by "lower"???
mcding, i mean that the fin plugs on one side are like 11" from the tail and the other side is 10.5" from the tail, i just somehow marked them wrong.
Aha! That's a tough fix. But don't feel bad. I once towed a set of side bites out instead of in. Got a board back once from the glasser. A thruster. Either I marked them wrong or the shop installer screwed up. He set the front of the rail fins at the mark I intended for the rear of the the Futures boxes. Rendered the board completly uselss and unsellable. A sharper guy would have figured it out. Not this guy. Lowel
Glass on some rear fins and if you don’t like where they are you can grind them off and glass them on again. Possiblity for a good learning experience.
If your closer spaced fins are on your heel side I would just try and ride it how it is with the assymetric fin placement…you may be pleasantly surprised.
If it’s on the toeside I’d do as above and route out the plugs and reset in a new foam insert. You could easily hide it with some creative artwork.

Thanks guys, the board wasn’t for me it was for a customer. I ended up doing the foam inserts. I knocked $25 off the board for him and told him i would fix it if anything ever happened to those plugs. He rode it and said it rode great. I guess ill measure twice cut once next time.
