I did a probox install and put black pigment in the resin… There is a shadow on the deck. :( I am going to sand the boxes / resin down tomorrow, but I am a little worried about the boxes possibly having exothermed and melted the EPS.
If it did exotherm, can I just fill the void with resin? How can you tell where the void is?
Perhaps black pigment was not a good idea…
Currently, the boxes “feel” pretty solid… Not wobbling or anthing…
The board is 2lb EPS with RR CE resin. Boxes were put in with CE + Slow hardener. The cloth layup was 2x 4 oz S-Glass bottom and 2x 4oz S glass + deck patch. All RR CE fast for lam / hot coat.
I am gonna sand the boxes down to the deck and then feel around - hopefully I can tell if there were melty spots by softness in the glass…
If it did, you certainly don’t want to put in more resin and melt even more. If the fin feels solid, leave it alone. If there’s indeed melted foam, you’ll know first time the fin gets stressed or hits something. There’s a lot on info in the archives about fixing when that happens.
When the foam around the box starts to melt, you’ll see the resin level around the box drop… so you add more. Then it drops again… so you add even more… etc. It’s like a runaway train, and you end up using far more resin than you should… about an oz per box. If that didn’t happen, you’re good. I think you’re just seeing the black through the thin foam between the lam and the box. Besides, with slow hardener, 2lb foam, and a properly routed hole, you should have had no problems at all.
like njsurf said if you routed the board properly there should be no problem, but it is a good thing if you pigmented the resin cause you should be able to see the resin melting the foam and spredding around, also look at the deck, if it is all cloudy looking then you might have melted it
