I have a broken fin box in a new board that I need to remove. I’m sure I’ll have to use a router but any tips on how not to screw up the board would be greatly appreciated!

Take out the screws, make a template, and use shallow passes, no more than 1/8" each time. Also make sure the template doesn’t move.

I just had to remove 2 boxes. I used the original install router and bit and destroyed the bit. Yes I could have gone with very shallow passes but it is worse than doing a massive wood stringer. All the irregular surfaces and hardened resin can make the bit hard to control with a light weight trim router.
Sand the area down first if you are going to install another box. Just enough for the fin patch.
I used my 1/2 hp full size router with a straight bit on the second box and it went much smoother. The heavier tool will be easier to control and will be faster. Removed the shallow flange first then the fin slot. Once all the plastic was out I used the regular install router and jig to clean up the hole.
Don’t wreck your router bits. Use a dremel tool with a diamond cut-off blade (Harbor Frieght). Cut into the foam around the box. Cut the box into several pieces. Get a hammer and wood chisel and break out pieces until it’s all gone. You’ll have to hit it hard. Now pick up the router and cut a clean cavity and bond in a new piece of polyfoam. Re-router the new foam for the box , put in a new box , glass over it. This is what I do for EPS, but if it’s a poly blank you may get the box out fairly intact. If it turns out like this, clean up the hole and set in the new box.
Thanks everyone but the kooks sending pictures…I got it out nice and clean with the router.
"How do you REMOVE a future fin box?"
botch a takeoff, go over the falls, meet your board underwater, and get pinned to the bottom on top of it...
at least that's how i did it...
LMAO at the pictures
