How Long To Wait After HotCoat Untill Surfable?????

Hi there,

I did my final hotcoat on tuesday night (NZ time) and want to surf it tomorow morning (Sataday 10th Oct). I have tried searching the forums to find a rough time to wait but didnt find anything…

Is this sensible? roughly 80 hours??

I wouldnt want to destroy my First board that i have put sooo many hours into!!

I didnt do a gloss coat, just sanded the hotcoat down to 400 grit… was going to do a spray on it and then use a gloss acrylic in a spray can to seal it but that can still be done after surfing it, i just want to test her out!!

Let me know what you think…

Cheers again for all the help!

Tom

FYI, I let the lam coat sit for two weeks before i hotcoated it if this makes any difference…

Used 6oz on bottom and 4+6oz on top!!!

Board is PU PE

You spent many hours making this surfing thing

with your own hands, why spoil it?

I get cured boards back from the glasser and

won’t give them to customers until I age them

for four days at least. If you end up making a

“magic” board, you want it to last as long as

possible so try to age your boards.

That being said:

If it is a “first” attempt

and you are not that pleased

in how it turned out,

the surf it right away and learn

from your mistakes!

When I was starting out

withshaping & glassing my own boards,

I didn’t even sand out the hot coats,

just knocked down the rail overlaps

and rode the sucker!!!

Best luck whichever you do,

(damn you Ambrose, I’m starting to sound

like you, LOL) BKB

G’day Tomo,

With my own personal boards as soon as the clear acrylic is dry I surf them.

With customers, depending on temperature I tell them to give it about a week.

I once read something by Dave Parmenter where he said that a surfboard is 90% cured within 1 1/2 hours.

That lam isn’t going to get any harder now, Personally if I left a laminated board without a filler coat for two weeks I would have wiped it down with acetone to ensure a good bond.

If you used photo initiating additive it should have cured within 30 mins.

A good test that I always do is, when I drill out the plug holes ( FCS ) i grab the little disc of glass and bend it, if it snaps the board is just about ready to ride , if it feels rubbery let it go a few more days.

Hope that of some help.

Regards

Daren

Thanks,

Yup, whipped it down with meths before doing the hotcoat…

I have got glass on fins and a roving leash loop so cant do the snap test on the offcuts…

Sooo, If it is not fully cured, and i do surf it tomorow (after 3 & a half days) what could the negative effects be?? is it likley to dent easier? delam?

???

Thanks again

Ive been told that when it stops smellin like resin its cured

But I would set it out in the sun off and on for about 10 mins at a time and maybe wait a day or two after it stops smelling

2cnts

Cheers, ill give it a sniff when i get home tonight haha!

If it isnt completly cured and i still surf it, what is likley to happen?

Thanks

Tom

first thing you will get is heel dents

Are you taking about epoxy or PE. I more concerned about the curing time of the lam coat. For regular PE resin with hardener, I wait at least a week. For UV resin, a few days.

For epoxy, I wait a few days before I even sand the hot coat. I found it easier to sand that way.

My 2 cents worth.

I ride them as soon as they’re sanded if it’s uv cure. Mike

I just take it out when I’ve finished sanding/finish spraying. Never had any problems.

I’m still trying to figure out how you’re going to ride it October 10th if you’re posting this November 8th? yuk yuk

Listen to your Uncle D

Chur,

Took it out to piha this morn for some fun waves… paddled good, was bloody quick and couldnt really turn it at speed at first, but once i fugured out the quad fin placement, was real fun… easier to ride in the smaller waves!!

Got heaps of comments on the beach about where i got the board from, fins look good, ect ect…

was pretty stoked!!

So now, seen as i have surfed it now, wax comes off, back to sanding the bottom and finish sanding the deck! Pinlines and a small blue fade!!

Any seggestions for easy wax removal??

BTW, the deck did not dent so the resin musta been fully cured

Cheers for all your advice

Tom
