How Much More Will This Epoxy Yellow?

EPS foam

two 6oz, white tint bottom

one 6oz, white deck tint

one 6oz, clear deck free lap to bottom

FH epoxy resin

After two weeks, deck is fine, rails are fine, bottom has diff size spots that are yellowing, some along the free laps, others not. Scale of 1-10, it’s a 2.

Epoxy resin yellowing? Or clear cloth wrap? It’s light yellow now, how much more will it darken? Maybe brown?

it should stop when its about the color of weak tea as a generalisation… it might go slightly darker than that over time…

each resin is a bit different…

Spray a UV stable clear over it if you want it to stop… uv light is the cause.

Foreground was glassed last week. Background was glassed two or three months ago. Both with FH epoxy.

I have a yellowing board too.

But because the foam is blue, the board is green now. But I don’t care about the color because it was my first board and I barely use it.

But has it an effect on the strength of the board? Because when it doesn’t I will leave it like that.

Is that a blue dow stringer in the background board?

I’ve been reading that the expensive auto clear coats have pretty good UV blocking, the good UV blocking chems are expensive so you get what you pay for. The UPOL number 1 looks to be a good option, though they all seem a bit nasty as far as your health goes. Maybe take it to a car body shop and get them to do the job?

I have little more to add other than another pic of an example.

  • Board on the left is glassed using West System epoxy. It went this color after only about 1 month. Hasn’t gotten any worse though.

  • Board on the right is a stock standard PU/PE that is about 2 years old and as white as white.

Dawn shame really as the board on the left is my 6’5" mini-gun and a really nice shape. I’ll be taking notice of Rif’s suggestion of putting on a UV coat next time.

Unfortunately my experience with West System so far has been tint it or live with yellow… got some really nice red tint - maybe thats the answer?

it really is no big deal though

i dont see why boards have to be white

I hear what you’re saying, but they don’t look so nice in Mellow Yellow.

If you’re shaping a retro board and want that mellowed aged look, go for it I say.

Still performs the same though
