How much resin should i need to buy to lam and hot coat a 7’0" shortboard? im doin double 4 oz glass deck and single 4 oz glass bottom then hot coating it. also, wheres a cheap place to buy resin? I only know of 1 online retailer that is decently priced… does home depot sell it in bulk? also, what type of catalyst is good for my first time lam and hot coat?
Hey
I’ve only built two bords so far but they were both around the 7 foot mark but made of wood. The first board I used 5 kilo of polyester resin the second I’ve some how managed to use only 3 kilo. I did put an second layer of 6 oz on the deck of the first but I’m sure that wasn’t 2 kilo worth. I’d say bank on 5 kilos and you should be OK. No idea where to get it from cheap in the states but if you were here I’d be able to help. Sorry!

Depends how much you slop on the floor, but about 3.5 quarts average for everything.
gallon of each and your cool!
shaper guy,
one gallon is usually enough. you mentioned home depot as a resin source. most hardware stores only sale boat resin which is very low quality and is yellow or brown. make sure to use resin specifically designed for surfboards. most surf shops cary it. however it’s usually very expensive, and sold in small quantities.
check out places like surfsource.com, foamez.com, and fiberglasssupply.com. these are great sources and will have anything you need to fully shape and glass a board. wish you well.
shaper guy,
i’ve recently been using suncure resin on my boards. i would recommend it to the beginner because you can work with it as long as you want as long as you keep it out of uv light. that way you won’t have to be rushing and stressing and worrying about how much catalist to use and all that. i’ve been pleased with it. i get mine from surfsource.com. tell bryan that kiesel surf supply sent you. and if you have any other questions about glassing or the resin feel free to write me.
Just lammed + fin/hotcoated 6 all between 5-10 and 7-0 with a fiver, at least half a gallon left. Mostly 4 oz, maybe 3 of them have one layer of 6 oz each. And I’m not exactly stingy with the resin.
