I just recieved a 20 litre drum of lam resin plus some wax in styrene. What ratio of wax in styrene do i need to add to the resin to make some filler resin??
Any advice would be much apprecited.

Anywhere between 2 and 5% seems to be common advise.
Thanks mate. I just noticed that the tin is labelled styrene monomer, is this the same thing???
No, not the same: styrene monomer is used to thin resin (for gloss resin). Wax in styrene is wax diluted in styrene monomer. You might try and make your own by incorporating wax in it, but I’m not sure about the proportions. Better buy some: ask for “wax in styrene” or “surfacing agent” as I think some people call it. Using only styrene monomer will result in a fluid resin but it will remain sticky on the surface. What happens with wax in styrene is that wax being lighter rises to the surface of the hot coat and turns into an airproof film that allows resin to fully polymerise under it. Thus no sticky surface and a sandable coat.
hi beerfan !
since you’re in oz , why not just buy the filler resin ?
ben
I’ve just checked on my resin instructions and it says wax in styrene is 10% wax in it.
It’s 1 ounce/30cc’s… per… quart/liter(surfacing agent+lam. resin) if it’s 2 percent(amount of parafin in stryene)if it’s 4 percent…then???..you can go over or under this amount by a longshot w/o killing it.
Ben, a guy on another forum told me that he just bought lam resin, and that he added wax in styrene to it when he wanted to make filler resin. This seemed like a good idea, coz its cheapest for me to buy the resin from qld, ( im in nsw ). That way, i just got a 20 litre drum of lam resin, and i can use it as both lam and filler resin. Saves me buying 2 lots of resin. Plus, i’ve got a 5 month old girl, which im finding means less cash to just go out and spend when i want haha!!!. Once i send the monomer back, and get the w in s, and get a blank, my mate and i will be making our first board, an 8 foot “egg”. If it turns out o.k, im planning on stripping my minimal back, depending on how hard that is to do, and either reglassing it, or maybe even a fuller volume shortboard. probably best to see how our first effort turns out!!, and also to improve from being a novice surfer to at least intermediate!. Wish us luck, and feel free to pass on any 1st time tips!.
P.S Thanks to everyone for their replies, it is much appreciated.
