Take a creative shape, lam and hot coat it. No sanding, maybe minor. Surf it. Tweek, at the beach, with a portable grinder and surform. Lop some places off and UVresin the creative surgery. Surf it again. Don’t like the nose thickness? Grind the bottom down to taste, brush on some UV resin and go out again. And again, and again?
What do you think? You’d save SO much time and money, not having to put in the “monster” hours. Kinda crude method but I think it’d work. I’m gonna try it.
I suppose it's possible you might get somewhat "quicker" feedback, dependent on time, sunshine and tides. (and possibly at the expense of some skin)
But please, whatever you do, find a method to leave no trace of your experimentation, except pictures and notes.
I saw Jeff Ho ride a shaped blank at a Bay st. contest in 72 won his heat , reshaped the tail from diamond tail to swallowtail inbetween heats and won the contest!! Goforit.post your results.
lots of foam and itchy glass dust. no muy buena idea amigo. Jack.
Of course, I’d be standing upwind, away from the crowds. Pollution-wise, it certainly can’t be any worse than the 5-dogs I saw the other day, spraying diarrhea right into the surf, while the owners just looked on and smiled and did nothing.
So, pollution wise, as long as you can point the finger at someone else who is supposedly worse than yourself, then you don’t have to think about it? That’s flaky reasoning and the world doesn’t need it,or your board shaping waste on the beach.

and I’m SURE you don’t use any polluting substances when building your little wood things.
Try taking responsibility for your own polluting behaviour rather than that of others. At least that way you will have some control over the result. If you really want an argument about who is the least toxic to the environment, then you had better get your act together fast. Unfortunately you did not understand the point of my post regarding your proposed beach pollution expedition.

Roy baby, dozens of us in here have already talked about your suspect behavior and we all have come to the conclusion that you need to take that “stick” outta your ass. Use your hands, pliers, or have your gay roommate do it. Just do it. You’ll be happier in the end.
If you don’t have something good and positive to say in here, don’t say it.
Roy, I’d kind of like to hear your answer to the question:

If you don’t answer, you’ve done the same thing you’ve accused 220 of by lambasting someone worse than you but admitting no responsibility yourself. For all we know, his idea is not worse for the environment than your work, but better, since you haven’t answered.

You see what we’re up against with freebie signups in BB’s? Anyone else agree that Sway’s should have a private board, as an option, for serious surfboard builders. I know there are numerous professional BB’s that are only open to it’s serious members. Personal attacks and name calling don’t belong in here.
Throwing resin and foam dust on the beach is a bad idea. I don’t see how you can complain about organic dog crap (not good either) and then justify dusting the beach with foam, glass and resin. If you really want to do this experiment, rent a cheap cargo van, park it by the beach, tweek the board in there, sweep up the mess and throw it in the garbage where it belongs.
I take seriously the idea that we should be responsible for our own environmental actions. Regarding my surfboard building enterprises, I use plantation grown timber which is grown locally, and much of what I use is scrap taken from an incinerator, as my board building system uses a lot of short blocks and transverse frames. I also sometimes use short offcuts to strip plank decks and bottoms, carefully joining pieces using slash joints. I use an epoxy resin which is known for its relatively low toxicity, and I use absolutely no solvents for any purpose at all, other than vinegar and coconut oil for cleanup. I do not burn timber and epoxy resin waste, instead it is composted on the property where the board is built. I am also open to suggestion as to how I might improve my methods (in terms of environmental impact)

Dog crap is horribly polluting. The viruses and bacteria from animal waste (and human too) is what closes beaches. They had a hell of a time figuring out what was polluting the Con so bad. Turns out is was a combination of leaking septic tanks, human excrement from the bums camping near the creek, and lo and behold, animal waste. It’s such a bad problem that State beaches outlaw ANY dog on the beach. A little foam dust is miniscule compared to animal waste. And you suggest I throw it in the garbage? Where does the garbage wind up? Landfills. What happens to landfills? They leak into the water table. You ever see how they fill the landfills? Bulldozers and the likes, which spreads ANY dust right into the atmosphere. I seriously doubt that 100% of foam dust anywhere, is contained. Even with a vac system, it gets on tools, clothes, etc, and gets transported to the outdoors eventually. If we wanna REALLY talk about pollution, let’s talk about what you drive - a car. Horribly polluting, yet I bet every person on this board drives one. And let’s talk about the almost 9-billion people on Earth, with most countries allowing rivers of excrement to flow to the ocean. You ever been to India? I have. Oh, how about the billions of poopy plastic diapers in the landfills? You think they break down organically? Plastic? Nah. Just zillions of baby turds fermenting underground.
If we are going to widen this discussion, (as you have) then we should also point out that the foam blank has already polluted the atmosphere long before it gets ground at the beach, if it was blown with toluene di isocyanate, and the atmosphere was polluted again if the board was ‘glassed’ using polyester resins. talking about dog poop won’t change this.

True. I really love building surfboards but the whole process is horriby polluting. I kinda dread getting a new job just because of that. I heard in LA County that certain polyester resin is outlawed already.
Quiteapart fromthe pollution question, are you going to have time at the beach to get a smooth bottom finish, and if not, won’t that affect your results?
