How to get rid of this when wetting out lam coat

Questions.

If it were the cloth, would’nt it be over the entire board?

Why only where the lap is?

Did you use the same paint?

What cloth is that?

…it s the paint; normally with Reds and Violets; other culprits like Maroons (Chocolates, etc) sometimes change the colors; the worst is the Green. then the resin-fiberglass. Yes, BarrySnyder; if I go with some of those colors (and I paint deep flat surfaces) I have that situation for a moment, then the resins saturates the fiberglass and all it s ok, but you need to know how to squeegee “out” the problem if not some brands like Aerialite will show a bit the fibers. I still paint with those intense colors and always finished right however is like playing with fire. All these is about Polyester resin; I think the problem with the epoxies is the viscosity; too much for those colors; however, you have more time, so like Lemat said, better to warm it up and let the resin soaks better in those heavy colored areas and see what happens.

Good thread.  I have noticed this also, with epoxy resin over a dark color.  This board is epoxy resin, you can see it over the blue rail, but the yellow deck was fine.  This was 6 oz. cloth, pretty sure its Hexcel.  I didn’t heat the resin at all, but working in pretty warm weather.

Its the cloth.  It’s probably not as bad with single 4 oz…right?   Most likely the deck only because of 6 oz, or 6-4 deck etc.

When I’m doing color work on hard colors I do a single 4 oz first sometimes.  But as Jim P said…If you want an epoxy board…get white. any other colors are too much hassle.

Maybe if there was a way to get the resin out on the cloth all at once…like a roller, or maybe baste the foam then lay the cloth out?  I don’t know just thinking out loud?

Try the single 4oz trick with some very soft plyable colth. Stay away from the stiff warp stuff.  Thats the stuff i make white surfboards out of.

I had the same issues with that cloth. You get what you pay for.

In ref to your comment:  “Also i have heard a lot of you needing a way smaller amount of resin to wet out your boards. X  amount of ounces per board foot. I am using 72 - 80 mixed ounces to wet out a double layer of 6 oz. 11’ x 32” SUP. This includes the rail lap as well (obviously)"

In reply:  FYI  I just finished a 7’ 9" x 22 x 2 7/8 Quad. and took account for the ammount of epoxy used. I had approx 1/3 or less of a bottle of RR Quick Kick, I used  52 oz of epoxy from start to finish. That’s 6-4 top 6 bottom, 4 fin boxes, leash plug, lam and hot coat.

My vote is that it isn’t the paint. You can see the weave in the blemish.  If it were the paint, the weave wouldn’t show so clearly.

Is it possible your roll of cloth might have come into contact with moisture at some point?

…hello Resinhead and Everysurfer, is the fiberglass BECAUSE of the paint. If no paint you ll barely have that. How do I know that? I said in the other comment and I can add that I have done more than a “couple” of boards laminations over super complicated paints, arts, etc.
