how to shape a fish

a loyal customer has asked me to shape a “fish” for him.

he is about 6’ and 240 lbs. ihave made for him really big longboards  so far.

his skill level is really at beginner level but he has seen these boards and finds them interesting.

I was thinking of using a us blank 9’3" A. That would give me his desired length (8’ +)

and that blank can be made to a 25" width and 4" thickness. It is attributed to

MR Ben Aipa. I am looking for suggestions from anyone who has had the experience of shaping

one of these things. Thanks in advance

…hello,

fish is not longer than 6 (not “fishness” pass that dim)

plus, fish is not a begginer design

Im with you on the beginner part. A board like that takes time to learn the turns and capableaties.

Im trying to steer him to something else that would be more manuravable than his 10 6 long board

Don’t reinvent the wheel…just pull up 7S Superfish and copy it. EPS floats better than PU if you want to consider it. Keep the rocker flat on both ends so it paddles fast. The board will surf typically ‘2 dimensional’ like fish tend to do: flat and skatey. It will go fast just standing on it for down the line speed but less manuverable than a regular HPSB.

For what you get, you give up something.

I’m kinda over fish and have found better.

To each their own.

thankyou mr d. i will give him that option of eps and the difference in cost of glassing. However he is really sold on the 8’ part.

maybe an 8’ miny mal with eps?

…7 4 or 7 6 egg shape

with 3¨ thick; flat deck to maintain the volume and 22¨ wide in the middle; with plenty of rocker in the last 1/3 if the guy want loose the board easyness

8 is not so good dim for an egg

so if he really stick with that

you better go with a small longboard but with a pulled in nose and tail

but in my opinion the egg is the best

thank you . that is another option. that’s why i posted this question.

I never cease to be amazed at how many threads get started here under the Industry Forum that other than the word "surfboard" have nothing to do with the "Industry" as a whole.  Move this thread over to general discussion please.  cjsurf get a clue. If you need technical advise post under "General Discussion".  I also think that anyone who offered and fed into this without bringing up the fact that this thread belongs  elsewhere is oblivious to that fact.

thanks for everyones input i will keep you posted as things progress

customer couldnt come up with the money and declined, however  i shaped it any way for myself and will be glassed this week. any market for a fish for a larger person?

If it’s 8’, it isn’t a fish. The upper limit in length is a tad over 6’, and that’s for a very large person. As someone already said, fish aren’t for beginners, anyway.

I love it ,still the same story, all the novice longboard guys want to go shorter so they still think the retro fish is the way to go.  Please keep pushing the fish to as many people as possible, make em short...real short. Make em so the guy floats up to his neck. Make em fat real fat with no curve...lot's of parallel rail lines....put a big, wide tail on it too  My wave count continues to skyrocket  Add a couple of those Alaianania, maybe you could sell that guy on one of those...go to home depot and buy a 1x12x7' and round the ends....perfect...my wave count just jumped again!!!

Thanks Retro dudes, your the best with your dreadlocks and rusted out 60's cars!

Absolutely correct. 8', that's some sort of split-tail 'fun shape' at best.

Perhaps we should call 'em whales?

doc...

I’ll show you a fish that will up the wavecount even for a superhero like you.

…hey Resinhead

too much fun in the last days with your comments

so props for you

thanks for all the help. Is this a board that people might buy? i think that there might be a market for it because most people that return to surfing after a number of years go to a longboard. However a longboard may not do it for you after awhile. The customer  may want something more responsive. A big fish might work for them oncer they get feet under them. (if you don't want to call it a fish

call it a board that Ben Aipa would ride)

the final result was 8'11" 24" WIDE and 4" thick. I made it a twin fin. I used a us blank 9'3"A. I cut the length from the nose as it has a sharp nose rocker, The board works well in2; to over head. it is VERY fast, and alot of fun. The volume matches a longboard but faster!
