How toxic is resin to breathe?

I am glassing my board in the garage (detached garage) and the ventilation is mediocre. Since I only plan on making a board or two a year, I was wondering if breathing the polyester resin fumes is very toxic. I must admit I like the smell, but it does make me a little dizzy. Plus, I bet the neighbors are going to call the EPA.

Helth and safety information on different materials can be found on http://surfing.rdx.net/Building/risks.html I’d wear a respirator mask no matter how well ventilated your glassing bay is. regards, Håvard

As human beings we are not designed to breath fumes, foam dust or any pollutants. Breathing such irritants can lead to Asthma and all sorts of problems. Get yourself a decent face mask, one that takes twin fume cartridges, which will stop the fumes reaching your lungs. I use a 3M one which works a treat, I think North produce on too, they’re not too expensive, and will stop you wheezing out there in the line up!

Solutions : 1) Use sun-cure resin but you still have to put on the respirator. 2) Use epoxy resin, odorless, still no evidence of leading to cancer but may be causing sensitive to someone else. If you plan to have opaque color, epoxy is a good choice. STYRENE IS A KNOWN CARCENOGEN TO HUMANS!!!DON’T BE FOOLISH, WEAR A RESPIRATOR AT ALL TIMES.

STYRENE IS A KNOWN CARCENOGEN TO > HUMANS!!!DON’T > BE FOOLISH, WEAR A RESPIRATOR AT ALL TIMES. Styrene causes testicular cancer, boys does that get your attention???

I don’t know who started this “epoxy is a magical safe chemical that won’t harm you or the enviroment” B.S. Epoxy exposure can cause fatigue and body aches. Wear protection.

Sorry man, pls. check what I have posted, I didnot say “it’s okay to breathe epoxy” and I did say “it may cause sensitive”. what’s the best respirator to use for working with poly. resin? i don’t want my sack to fall off?

…DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE QUESTION?(JUATA JOKE GUYS)Herb

Its highly toxic ! Wear a breather ( put it on just before you open your cans or bottles) made by 3M with cartridges 6001. These would last you aprox 6 months. As soon as you smell any resin odor its time to replace them. Take the respirators once you leave the room. Breathe pure air outside and dont return to the glassing room for the next 4 hours minimum.

…man, regarding cartridges, 6 months!? may be you glass a few boards…

They last around 9 hours of full use.

First post…  I think the questionmark here (not answered as far as I’ve seen?) is “isocynates.”

Apparently, isocynates are too fine for most masks, including those pink ones made for paint & chemical fumes, to filter out.

Does anybody have info on whether/which surfboard epoxy resins do or don’t have isocynates, and whether there’s a mask that filters them out?

The only comment I have to add is that, in all seriousness, I seem to be dumber and to have crappier balance since I started shaping.

But I’m also getting older so…   Fuggit.

FWIW, this autopainting thread recommends you change the cartridge every day when working with isocynates (why is explained in thread):  http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/epoxy-primer-fumes-50552-2.html

Howzit reverb,I used mine for around 10 hrs, then when I cutback on boards it was 1 set a month and in a ziplok bag when not on my face. Aloha,Kokua
