Yeah, man.
Is it time to start a new hull thread?
I just don’t feel in tune if I can’t mind-surf those crazy curves.
I took my 7’2" Spence hull out to my local beach break yesterday. It was chest high and very peaky; perfect waves for a thruster. My buddies cracked up when they saw what I paddled out on. What they didn’t realize was that I could get into the waves before them which set me up for more than my fair share of cover ups. What they also didn’t know is that the shape of the hull keeps you firmly planted on the steepest faces. I had soooooooo much fun that I’m still grinning like a Cheshire cat.
couple days ago i surfed my 7’9" liddle in some less than perfect beachbreak and had a couple of fun ones!as of yesterday, that board now belongs to mr. j.shank…i replaced it with a wicked 7’6" liddle roundtail…
i’ve never had my hull out in good, peeling beachbreak… only pointbr and reef. I know a spot, but it’s a drive - beachbreak, but it’s a bunch of a-frame sandbars – wondering how the hull will go.
do most of you CA types ride mainly points – or is it just more convenient for you to jump into some bbreaks?
Just got this from friend w/ new Anderson
Went surfing saturday at (beach break). A little junky but I got one wave, a late take off, where the Borq showed its stuff. It sucked down in the wave and as it broke on me, the force of the lip drove me and the board into a beautiful full rail bottom turn, with fin flex and all. It was so easy, the board did it almost by itself, and produced the unmistakable magic feeling of a hull in motion...
Hi Jason,
I normally ride mine on points and reefs, places that are consistent and peel for quite aways. I surf my fish or Nugget at the beach breaks but the shape looked so fun yesterday that I had to try the hull. Believe when I say that it worked VERY well.
BTW- I replaced the True Ames fin with my G.L. flex fin and I am very stoked with it. It has a more natural feel to the way it loads up and releases. From now on I’ll use the T.A. as a backup fin only.
Marc
I got a TA fin, but the volan one. it feels to the hand to have the same flex as my liddle fin. maybe next time we get a prolonge swell i’ll switch mine out to see if different.
by the way, now that we’re on fins on this thread – i have mine set at 13.25" up, and i rarely feel the need to move it. ( when i have moved it i felt the difference right away - like i moved it up to 14"+ and it felt boggy paddling, and i boofed up a coupla waves cuz of it) But maybe cuz i’m alway surfing points very similar)

I always enjoy my Liddle in clean beachbreak (only a few mins. from my home). It’s just a shorter ride ususally. I love the speed though.
the TA volan l-flex fins are good to go. for sure much better than the non-volan ones.pato-you can get the TA volan l-flex fins from scott at foams, fins and fiberglass on main st.
A point of clarification. Though we have worked together since the mid-1990’s, and are currently working on the Hullabaloo Surfboards project with Oliver Parker, Paul Gross is not associated with iShapes.
Thank you.

This is Spencer Kellogg and Paul Gross’s site, seems pretty much Spencer is public face. So far the forum isn’t working or at least I can’t get in and Spencer emailed me that it needs fixing and he has been too busy w/ other work so far to get to it. BUT my new hull is finished and curing until I can get down there and pick it up. Will report…
Spence,
What is the Hullabaloo Surfboards project?
Thanks,
Jim
Hullabaloo is our new label. We currently have a few models:
X-2 – A modern interpretation of the classic step-deck
Judge – 9’0" roundtail
Flo – 8’8" round, almost squaretail that incorporates some vee forward of the fin
Stringerless – …
8’8" Jack K
Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification. Sorry about the misinfo.

Comparing TA fin to GL fin: different template? foil? flex? One of the above or some combination of them?
I have a liddle volan fin ( 9" i think), and i just bought a TA volan fin ( also 9"). i put them side by side and they are nearly identical in dimension (foil, templete), and they feel like they have the same flex, but i have never surfed the TA.
i got the ta for a backup, cuz these flexfins look real fragile.
I’d bet True Ames and G. Liddle are working together, or w/ permission to.
the original ta-l-flex fins were close in foil, same template but regular glass thus not same flex. gl showed 'em how they should be foiled, etc. now that yhey are available in volan, they are just like an original gl flex fin…(well, pretty damn close anyway…) and the flex is proper, not the mush of the original ones…
got my carbon hull out last night, it felt nice and smooth…rode it in short beach break though, pretty hollow, nice and glassy as the sun went down. the last wave in was moonlit and down the line…the kind where you hear more than you see…that was a trip, the most ‘feeling’ ive ever had from a hull, every drop of water was diplaced to the furthest extent
…or at least what i heard of it.
Super-stoked for you.
