I've decided, at least on the hybrid, to go with ribs after all. Thought about stiffening with glass inside, but for budgetary reasons, its gotta be ribs (man, when is this stinky California housing/remodeling economy ever gonna turn around? - its starting to impact my board-building!). Might still go ribless on the fish - the smaller surface area makes it more feasible. The bigger hybrid was just too flexy.

Huck if that yellow bonzer egg is the surfy surfy 6'8 Jp will let you try it out. I stole it from him for bit great board. I just glassed my bonzers i will post a thread when my fingers stop bleeding from all the sanding.

Man, I'd love it! But I'd probably just nerd out, or ding it, or something stupid like that. Sure is a fun looking shape, 'tho! Yeah, love to see bonzers. Lotta sanding with the tricky bottom, eh? I have surfy surfy in favorites - go there on a regular basis! Not sure if I feel up to attempting bonzer on this one, or save it for a later build.
dry-fitting the ribs
Hi Huck,
Sorry for the slow reply. Actually I'm a starving contractor too and have been busy bidding jobs probably won't get. LOL! If it wasn't for the surfboard kit sales we'd have gone under sometime last year for sure. I bought my CNC for cabinetmaking not surfboards. Our cabinet bus is in the toilet too. Beyond in the toilet actually. Just started a small job, the first since last October. Its rediculous. The silver lining for me is the economy has forced me to make money making surfboards which (was always my hobby) continues to grow. So when it all blows over I'll probably end up strictly a surfboard manufacturer rather than a cabinetmaker. Something I'd MUCH rather do anyway. If I never see another cabinet again in my life that will be OK with me! This build is looking great as always! You're a talented woodworker! I look forward to watching this post to see how you handle the Bonzer bottom. I hope you can make it to the show. It would be great to meet you in person. Hang in there! It's got to pick up someday. Who ever is left standing may do pretty well. That's what I'm hoping anyway!

Hi Huck,
Glad i found this thread , i travel from this forum to the other you speak of to make up for the lack of work.Sometimes its a bit of a job with the sofa hanging out of my ass! Good to see you've been busy with some more boards, Looking forward to seeing your Bonzer thread. I've looked at most of your stuff i think; the pics, the art,the woodwork etc.COOL. Been thinking of showing a bit more of my work, but have not finished my first board yet,its not a cheap venture in England this H.W.S. hobby, but at least i can get rid of a few off cuts.
Cheers

Thanks Brad. Like you, I could walk away tomorrow and not miss it - after 30 years in the business, its just become too filled with negativity on all fronts.
Maybe this is part of the problem, just got this in my email this morning...

I love that line "occasion knocks but once" hahaha. Figures, don't it? One reason I got into building my own boards is that I discovered that my pu board was made in China, and I had fears of myself supporting child slave labor sweathouse surfboard production LOL!
Hello Martin, thanks for the props, love to see pics of your board! BTW, this is the bonzer thread hahaha!
Yeah I compete with that China junk all the time. Luckily they drop the ball a lot so the contractors I work for never use them. Tons of homeowners that don't go through a contractor use those guys though. I'm sure I loose more jobs to them than I want to know about. Hope the homeowner’s leave the windows open so all the formaldehyde fumes can get out! hahaha. Bonzers looking cool. Painting the bottom?
Well, the bottom looked too nasty once I sanded through the layers of plywood. I guess it would be fine if I used solid wood planks like on my last board, but I wanted to give this plywood a try, and it does seem lighter (I'm at 15 lbs ready for glass) than it would be with wood planks, so that's good. But yeah, looks like paint or tint or something on the bottom.
BTW, formaldehyde fumes, yeah buddy. Like that DirectBuy recycled termite poop crappola hahaha. Hey, maybe they can get a deal on some Chinese drywall while they're at it!
Yo' Huck
So this is the Bonzer then wasn't sure with your design as you build method, love it. China rip off cabinets made by cheap labour with dodgy materials sounds about right, that's why they're in Tibet etc plundering there resources, there decent timber ran out years ago......
Thirty years in construction, not quite but i know what you lads are on about, Nice to be doing something for our selves hey? rather than some awkward customer who wants to keep changing there mind or isn't to keen to pay after a bastard of a job that turned out nice with no appreciation. You cant let yourself get bitter and twisted about it,we're so lucky having this other interest.
Huck you can see my build so far on the other forum under Western uk or qwest. I intend to put it on Sways a bit later when I've got the hull and deck on.I'd be grateful of any comments, suggestions etc if you have the time and inclination to look at it.
Cheers Martin
Hey Martin, I went over to the old T2S, but didn't see your build. Could you post a link? I can't get in the new T2S, and I wasn't enjoying it there anyway, so I've dropped out of that one. But if its posted in the old forum, I'll check it out. Although I'm sure you've got a cracking good start on things!
BTW, "You cant let yourself get bitter and twisted about it" - Man, I wish you had told me that awhile back - I think its a little too late to lock the barn once the horse is out LOL!

Just about to take over the summer house for laying out the deck ,shaping and glassing (pic later). Not got a great deal of room hear. I'm glassing the interior of the deck due to using a few heavier woods, just to make sure my 6'3" 185lbs Adonis frame doesn't go through first outing.

Cracking job! Completely different build system than me, so I have no real imput there, sorry. But sounds like you've got er sussed!
Thanks Huck ,Cant wait to get it in the water but i wont be rushing it. Rome wasn't built in a day and all.You never know it might turn out nearly as good as your first built. That deck and hull are amazing. I love the way you used the folding wedges of planking to fill your last panels in the hull,no cramps needed there i bet.Do you intend to enhance the Bonzer with some Artwork? If so cant wait to see it.
