One thing I’d comment on is the apparent disconnect you have going between a bonzer fin setup  - which is designed to be surfed off the tail vs. the “deckpatch” theme on your deck that emulates the extra layer of cloth used on longboards where the deck takes extra abuse from kneepaddling and standing in trim.  It’s a nitpick, I know, but I think it does detract a little from the overall vibe.

I have a board in my garage right this moment that has a very similar template (practically the same, except shorter at 6-10), but is set up as a single fin with a flat bottom and some vee.   I built it 9 years ago and it remains a staple in our household quiver.   It’s been through the wars and lately my son has been on me to build its replacement, albeit at 7-6 like your’s.

Cosmetically, I’d agree with Ken - just do pinlines around what you already have and use a logo with a clear background.  Simple is clean.

Thanks for the imput.  Like I said, I'm gonna try to keep it simple - but if you knew me, you'd know how hard that is for me LOL!  That's cool that we have the same template.  I arrived at mine by blending several different boards I saw and liked, and some stuff I read on the internet.  The rocker is out of my head, so a bit chancy there!  I hope it works out to be a fun board for me to get back into surfing with!  Funny you mention the "disconnect" regarding the bonzer / longboard differences.  I basically see all longboards as tail-turners, and to me, the point of "hybrid" is that it is a mix of two disparate styles of board, with roots in each.  Shortboard - bonzer / longboard.  I notice even the Campbell brothers are shaping bonzer longboards!

Deck design aside, I decided to give some thought to painting the bottom.  I had already decided to paint it, and thought I might get creative.  I ran the idea of a fish or a wave past my wife - she suggested a mermaid (with modest long hair LOL).  Immediately I thought of a Shakira-type mermaid (my wife is a Shakira fan).  So here's my start.  And also, a start on my deck emblem.

that mermaids hair is way too long in the front

Hee Heee!

Finally masked off for pin stripes, sprayed a coat of clear and two quick coats of chocolate brown.  Very little bleed, so I was happy about that!  I put a white line around the "emblem", to give it that decal look.

BTW, can anyone give me the fin dimensions?  Not the placement dimensions, I got that, but the actual fin sizes.

If you’re still doing a “Bonzer” type fin setup…

Thanks gdaddy, got what I needed.  I think.  hahaha.

I swear this thing looks like a wall hanger for Trader Joe's!

Definitely "not likely to happen again anytime soon". Turned out to be WAY MORE WORK than I anticipated. But its basically done now, according to me. My wife, on the other hand, says it still needs work - my greatest critic. She'll tell me stuff like "her hair is too brassy", "make her mouth more friendly looking - and soften her eyes, she looks too mean" or "what is this worm doing in her eye?".

This morning I just sandpapered the face completely off and started over. She kept bringing me pictures from her bra catalogs, saying make the eyes like this, or make the mouth like this. I swear I spent as much time on those eyes as a woman spends in the morning! I don't see how they do it every day hahaha!

I didn't want to continue the mural into the fin area, and finally came up with the simple design you see here, after a lot of thought and sketches and a few false starts. I thought it would be funny to make the tail part look like foam - you know how you see foam boards painted to look like wood? So I painted a wood board to look like foam!  I don't know if it shows in the pic, but I painted it gray, then sponged white over it, to give it that stippled look of foam.  It really does look like foam up close. And I added a fake "stringer" - and to complete the look, I carried the bogus stringer across the board, you can see it in the blue water behind the mermaid.

OK, so its time to order glass and resin, and begin working on the fins. I'm gonna glass the side-bites, but may put a box in for the center fin. What does anyone recommend?

You could increase your volume even more if you extend the flat area of the deck out as much as another inch or so and use a steeper angle down to your rail.   [/quote]

You think I could get away with going steeper than this?  I thought I was pushing it already!

no box , glass the center fin on !!! all that work and then you are going to put a big hole in it .

but that is just my opinoin , do what you want

No you were not supporting child slave labour - thats protectionist fallacy

The point is moot now - he’s already been infected with the board building virus.  With his preference for all-wood construction he has basically stepped off the retail grid.

I love that line "occasion knocks but once" hahaha.  Figures, don't it?  One reason I got into building my own boards is that I discovered that my pu board was made in China, and I had fears of myself supporting child slave labor sweathouse surfboard production LOL!

Hahaha - you're probably right there!  Notice I said "fears of..." - Don't know if you live here in America, but a lot of low-priced hand-made products sold here are imported from countries with less than ideal working conditions and child protection laws.

That's all I was referring to.  The reign of walmartism!

BTW, I started my fins, whaddya think?

Bamboo plywood.  Since the sidebites are only foiled one side, I tacked the pairs together for shaping purposes.  And left a little excess to hold onto while shaping (you can guess how I learned that LOL).

Did some final touchups on my mermaid, and brushed a coat of clear "polycrylic" over everything.  Ordered some s-cloth and a leash cup from e-z foam ($52), and SB 112 epoxy resin & measuring cups ($125) from merton's.
