HWS wood in NJ

Looking for some insight. I built my first hws from cheap .25 in luan. For the next I’m thinking trying roy’s method of par profile any idea of available woods here that would work well. I looked at some red cedar that seemed light. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I made a post about the other board “hws first try”

Sorry if you didn’t get from the header I live in new jersey USA. Outside NYC to be specific.

I don’t know how much you are willing to spend, but Baltek is a manufacturer of end-grain balsa products that are skinned with hardwood veneers (or optionally with FRP). One of their products is called Decolite and is available in 8’x4’ and 10’x5’ sheets from 3/8" to several inches thick. A 1/2" 8’x4’ sheet can be found for a bit less than $200. As best I recall, Roy makes a core that is more-or-less a lattice of strips in layers that are at angles (usually or maybe always 90 deg). If you want to build that way and light weight is your goal, Decolite may be the thing. Average weight (varies with thickness and skin type) is roughly 13 lbs per cubic foot. The product is available at South Jersey Lumberman’s in Mays Landing. Baltek is headquartered in Northvale, so there should be availability up there from suppliers of boat-building materials. The only problem is that Baltek sells in pallet quantities, so you would need to find someone willing to break a pallet load (probably not too difficult). Sailnet.com used to carry the ash skinned 8’x4’ 1/2" variety in qty 1 at $180, but all they show now is the FRP skinned stuff at an even pricier $328. OTOH, I saw some really nice 2"x6"x8’ Eastern cedar in Lowes two weeks ago for $11 each.

Jersey white cedar is some of the best wood in the world for anything that has to float… Great weight to strenght raito. And easy to

bend or shape. It would work great with Roys way of building boards… Just finished this hollow one.

1/8" cedar

Don, that board is gorgeous! How about a thread with about another thousand photos of that?

yeah, seriously, that is a beauty. Should be a thread on it!

Two questions:

Dontask Where did you get the white cedar?

TBS78 Where in North NJ are you from?

Surfifty

I cut that tree down and milled it about 25 years ago...... It is almost my last board from that time (almost but not ). There is a mill in Denisville NJ that sells it and a few out side of Egg Harbor NJ.

dontask,

I grew up in Ocean County, if you could PM me with phone numbers for the mills, I would really appriciate it. Your board looks great!

Thanks

J. P. Collins is still going strong, eh:?> Good for them! Haven’t been there in quite a while, I may need to drop in and see what’s going on.

dontask, that board is sweet. white cedar over red, eh? have to make my way down rt9 this summer to locat some white cedar. i live up in chatham, as it facilitates my part in the rat race. but spend weekends in the summer spring and fall at my folks place in ortley beach. you used 1/8 inch, but it think Roy uses about 1/2 inch thick, right?
