I am a Turkey - What is Surf Art?--off topic

Happy Turkey day to you all - have a question regarding surf art?

What makes/ is surf art?

  • Is it a photo of a favorite break? with you on the best wave?

  • a painting?

  • A new board, just glassed?, just waxed?, first dent/ ding?

  • music?

  • photo of a guy shaping? glassing?

  • a glass on hand foiled fin?

  • ???

It surely cannot be a pair of board shorts, right?

OR

is it the stoke one gets from the first smell of salt water in the air?, the smell of a new wetsuit, the sand between the toes, the stories with the barley pops flowing?

thanks to all of you for “feeding my land locked stoke”

I like the stuff Epac’s friend does. Mike

surf art is that which connects to our sport/art and gives us pleasure…in my house, there is a surf print by mike cassity that we bought on our wedding aniversit¥, a balsa semi gun that i rode in grad school, a painting that i bought for 35$ on the north shore in 1969…surf art is what you want to enjoy…hummm, maybe the bottle of pinor noir at dinner is altering this post

There is not a definition of art.

Art has to do with human skills, ideas, abstraction, nature and rapresentation of it, human feelings and emotions and last but not least has to do with an artist.

Human skills are necessary to make a piece of art.

Abstraction is needed (and only humans have it apparently) to transform an idea into something made of matter (materials).

An idea is needed otherwise there wouldn’t be anything.

And also nature is necessary: before Magritte art had only to do with representing nature in the most lifelike way.

After (and now) art had more to do with representation of ideas or concepts: the abstract art was born.

Emotions are necessary to interface someone’s thoughts and feelings with the piece of art.

The artist is the medium between all these concepts and the one that sees the piece of art.

And a piece of art has nothing to do with utility. It’s just something beautiful (or ugly, depends on who’s seeing it) and it cannot be used for something exept to generate feelings, emotions.

This is my opinion.

Now, surf art is more linked to the old way of seeing art. I often see paintings of landscapes, of waves.

These are representations of nature. Often they have all the above mentioned, but they always miss something. For example abstraction or maybe ideas.

I don’t want to be offensive to anyone, don’t take it personally: I see a lot of beautiful things but not always have all the requisites.

Boards are beautiful things, they can be painted, you may insert a nice drawind in the glass job, but they are surfboards first of all. They have a function. A good glassing is a good work by a kraftman, a nice outline is good to ride waves, a nice inlay or a beautiful color can add beauty to it, but has not to do with the surfboard: it’s something added, that could stand alone.

It’s a very long and difficult talk. It’s also very interesting, but right now I don’t have time to expand everything.

I’d be glad to discuss with you about in this thread.

Now, to answer the question what is surf art I respond with an artist’s name: Wolfgang Bloch. He’s got all the requisites I mentioned before.

Stefano

I had the pleasure of visiting the studio of Steve last year. He’s one of the most original painter’s that I have ever seen. This was the the day after his son Even had won the excel at Sunset.

Howzit E-pacman, Steve is an insane artist and very humble about his art. He is on our judging crew so we are good friends and it’s always fun working with him. We have a couple of his paintings hanging and I like to check out what projects he’s working on so if I like one I can get it first.Aloha,Kokua

hey kokua, can you pm me steve’s email adress? i’d be really interested in buying some art from him in the near future if any are up for sale… thats some sick art… thanks, nova

Howzit novasurfer, Don't have his e-mail address, but will see if I can get it for you. There may be a web site that sells his art or I will get a phone number.Aloha,Kokua

alright thanks kokua

Those paintings are incredible. I was listening to a lecture on music last night. The lecturer stated something to the effect that great art is timeless. It is as contemporary today as it was 500 years ago or more. He was talking about the great composers and their music. Applies to art in general, I think. Mike

You could ask Bolton Colburn, or C R Stecyk.

You could scope out

or

To me, it’s art inspired by surfing and all that entails. Whether representational, abstract,

or even graphic arts. Look to Severson and Van Hamersveld for the roots of its contemporary beginnings. Then, there’s the work of Kevin Ancell, Sandow Birk, Billy Al Bengsten, Raymond Pettibon, Phil Dike, and many more.

Ron Stoner’s photos are a good example of photojournalism stepping above its intended purpose,

and achieving the level of art. When it comes to surf photography, Stoner wrote the book, and all others are just following in his footsteps.

Someone else mentioned music. I think all great art, whether it’s music, sculpture, visual arts, anything, should make you think. Safe and comfortable does not equal art, IMO. Art is a two-way conversation between the artist and the viewer/listener. If it doesn’t provoke thoughts, there should be a gut reaction, at least.

I once had a friend
