I found Paulownia lumber in the USA

www.worldpaulownia.com in GA.

I bought some seeds, but that is going to take a few years to bear fruit.

You can get 6 boards of 1"x4" x 5’ long for $64 including S & H.

Their are a few places you can buy it in bulk for $4-6 USD per board foot in TEN & GA.

I like the sample packs to play around with.

Now what to do with it.Would you try to resaw it or make a Roy method board?

What’s a cheap way to get it down to 1/16"?

Ian

hey ian

i dont think you be able to saw it less then 1/8

unles you use a large bansaw

a 5 inch throat saw will do it pretty good to 1/8 with a high fence

you need to have the board run over jointer first and square(or do it with a template and router after you cut the sheets)

then tape up the sheets and sand it with an orbital sander

Ian,

I buy half tree trunks of the stuff, see photo!

I take it down to the local joiners, and for 10 bucks they true-up the two large faces and square one edge.

I get them to thickness it to 75mm in the process.

Then I slice off planks at 75mm wide, and I usually cut it around 2mm.

I do that on a table saw, which is why I can only do 75mm high.

There is a bit of variation in the cuts unless you’re really careful, it’s hard to keep it perfect every cut, and once you get off line it’s hard to get it true again.

So I cut around 2 - 2 1/2 mm thick and plane down from there.

I run my electric hand planer over the face of the block between every piece I slice off - a good trick.

I made a jig for my planer, so it works as a thicknesser, with pretty good results!

But just sanding them with a sheet sander works, like Paul says.

Paulownia rules!

Nice find Ian. Too much work for my shop, I mean front yard and bedroom tool storage. Whatever you end up doing, please keep us posted.

Thanks for the info guys.

I had a chance at three 18"bandsaws for free a few years back.

I though nahh I’ll never need it and don’t have the space.

Oh well,

Ian

The way you cut the wood thin is to take it over to Ben’s house (Benny1) and he has a giant 14" bandsaw that use to be his grandpa’s. He might argue at first, but bring beer, aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh bbbeeeeeerrr

we bought several packs from them a couple of months ago

still need to find the appropriate core to attach them too

although a hollow would be nice it wouls also be just a bit more expensive with 1/4" skins

the woods real light

you can get 1/16" but it’ll take a fancy band saw (like a laguna with auto feeder) or a good table saw with a pro thin kerf blade (timberwolf etc).

We just cut ours as thin as we could on our band saw and ran it through a thickness planer to get it down to a smooth 1/8" with out alot of skipe with blade lock downs on the dewalt.

It’s a good wood

we’re doing the same with resawing of cedar and poplar boards and the paulownia is by far the lightest although dried wiliwilil and triple a-grade balsa may be even lighter.

ah yeah

Wood Carvers - Carving Blocks Available

I bought the 1x4 72" pack for 76.00 free shiping. Not to bad of a deal. When I asked about 1x4 10’ long 6 boards the shipping alone was 250.00. I passed on that.

I guess I got a great deal- 9 pieces @ 8 feet by 4" by 1/8" and 6 @ 8 feet by 3". The four inch (plu) pieces were rough sawn. The 3" pieces were planed smooth. All for $92 including shipping. It was an ebay deal, left overs from some guy’s project. I thought it was kind of pricey but I couldn’t find anything else. Now I realize I scored. Not easy finding full length pieces.
